I have just removed the entire rusted back floor pan of my three door Disco. Was going to buy a replacement floor from Craddocks (£60 approx plus welding) I'm trying to do this as cheaply as possible so does anyone know of any issues with fitting a wooden floor. To me it just makes sense. You can bolt an treated piece of ply down cut to shape and then put your rubber mat and carpet back on top with holes drilled for the seat belt anchors. it's easy to take out and access underneath for future maintenance. Can't see a problem with the MOT..... Got to do it cheap coz me bird wants a Pajero !!!!

i once had a mate that made a front bumper for a series2 out of timber, he used 3x3 and sanded the ends smooth. when he took it for an mot the bloke didn't know if he could pass it or not and after ringing about half a dozen of his mot mateys he decided to fail it just incase the dot stopped my mate and took his mot license off him so be careful.

I duno what to say m8. just when i thought i'd heard it all. bugger that, its not gona be no where near strong enough. its not a mpi youve got there its a v8.
and as for the p*****, well......

No way will that pass an mOT ... the answer is in the question .... seatbelt mounting points. You would be putting them into wood, thats a straight fail.

I'm doing mine this weekend, I'll let you know how hard it is.

I have heard of rear floors being rivetted in with the rivets no more than 125mm apart and the MOT being passed, but make sure you use steel rivets or there would be and electrolytic reaction between the steel floor and the ally rivets.

The seat belt mountings are bolted into the chassis. They just pass through a hole in the ply. The ply doesn't take any force on it. It would be well strong enough if I use 1/2" ply, the rubber mating goes over it and also the carpet.
Let me know how you get on with the job, where did you source the new floor from ?

its not a hard job to do but make sure you cut out all the rot and then check the cross members, sometimes they need replacing too.

Spoke to the guys who does my MOT's. He says he can't fail it.... Is there anymore MOT trained Mechanics out their who can find a clause that Pxxxxxx on my Chips ? This is not a back street garage, they are the second biggest servicing and parts company in Europe !

why would you use an untreated piece of ply?
id use either marine ply or treat/paint the bare BQ/wickes ply.

Stainless Steel, I think your talking serious money ! The proper replacement steel floor from Craddocks is £60. If you use that and treat it with some oil or paint once its in place then it should last OK.

Price is £56.40, this includes the VAT. I rounded it off, don't know what the postage was but I wanted the floor and two outer sills and it quoted me £114 total. Anyway going to drop the idea of the wooden floor as if I decide to sell the Disco when its finished, a wooden floor wouldn't be the best selling point.

personally i wouldnt even dream of a wooden floor. the stresses that are put through the boot floor are far higher than you think, and wood just wouldn't stand the test of time.
As for stainless steel you'll probably find it will accelerate corrosion of mild steel. have to check the galvanic tables for that one which i cant be bothered to do, but its not worth doing anyway.
for the sake of 60 quid, a bit of welding, and some slap and dash painting and or undersealing, i cant see the point in trying to reinvent the wheel or cut corners :)

I recieved my floor today, along with a load of other goodies :)

I'll be doing the floor swap either this or next weekend .... I reckon I might serialise it in photo's!

Ormus,
Thanks for the link. Mine looks a lot worse than the floor that they were replacing. I have already cut the floor out and will remove the tank this Friday. Still going to weld the floor in, rather than rivet.
Thanks
