New to the forum just now. Wondering whether anyone can help. The story so far is as below.
Vehicle 2002 Discovery TD5. For many months it has been very bad starting, and I mean very bad. The local Landrover garage checked it out, including computer diagnosis, and found nothing wrong. The bad starting continued and then, after several more weeks, the engine started cutting out whilst out on the road. This happened approximately once or twice a week. One point to note is that each time this happened the vehicle had been in an unrestricted speen limit, doing say 50 - 60 mph, then had slowed for a 30 limit, run at 30 for say a mile, then slowed for a road junction or traffic lights. Always stopping in the most awkard spot! I then changed the fuel filter and this gave good starting for only a day or so. Had the vehicle checked out again at a different garage and no fault found again. Carried on using vehicle for another 2 weeks, then again after running at 60 mph, ran at 30 for a short distance, engine started to splutter and managed to run another mile, not being able to go faster than 20mph before cutting out at traffic lights close to home. Returned to garage as due to go on holiday. New fuel pump fitted in a bid to be OK for holiday. With new pump fitted it stared and ran well, taking us approx 130 miles at high and low speeds no problem. After a few days of running around on holiday problems returned big style. Set out one day then after 4 miles engine cut out in usual way. After another mile same again. Turned round to return to base with engine cutting out at about one mile intervals. That night whilst checking things out myself, I noticed that the small breather between the base of fuel filler and tank was kinked, effectively blocking it. I cut this and let a new piece of pipe in, but no improvement. This was expected as the larger breather pipe does the same job when the fuel level is lower in the tank . I suspect that this kink had been there since the main agents had changed the fuel tank under warranty when the vehicle was relatively new, however it was not previously visible. The vehicle came back from holiday by recovery. The garage which had checked it over whilst on holiday, sugested a fault on a wiring loom on top of the engine, in their words. The vehicle imobiliser was also mentioned, but if this were the case why would changing the filter an the fuel pump later produce temporary fixes? There could always be more than one fault to leg you up when thinking things through. Note in all cases where the engine cuts out, it would restart after trying for a few minutes. It's a good job I have a good battery! Sorry for the long story, but if anyone could point us in the right direction, then that would be great. Many thanks.
