Can anyone give me some advice on the off-road comparison between a Disco 300tdi and a long wheelbase defender? It's not for green laning as such, but for practical work application due to where I live: forest access, heavy winter snow, landscaping contracting etc.

My take is the Disco is likely to perform better as it is lighter by around 500kg (I think?) and has less problems with ground clearance...

Any 'pearls of wisdom' appreciated :)
 
I own a fender as do the 2 gents above, but i have a friend who has a disco. To be honest, he's never been able to go anywhere i havent. yet! :D

I see the disco, as a sort of luxury defender. Obviously there are some big differences but, in terms of what your looking for thats how id view it.

Maybe you should look at a disco van? if its for work.
 
Fender every time!

Why drive around in the warm, quiet comfort of a Disco, with that feeling of wellbeing, when you could be experiencing the raw, noisy power of a real workhorse?

Downside is that the Disco will probably have mechanical heating and cooling! Fortunately, the Fender gives you the same climate inside as is outside, so your body will not have to suffer from the extreme changes in temperature when you get outside!

Just think of your health, and choose the Fender!

i have both. The disco 2 is far more comfier has a short wheel base at 100" has ABS/TC air con and a decent heater.
BUT it is wider, has fragile bumpers. They weight the same, well mine does as i have an S spec @ 2050kg.
So id have a disco commercial over a 110 due to purchae price, spec and comfort.

That said i love the 110!
 
i think by "more ground clearence" he means a disco is less likely to ground in the middle because its shorter wheelbase, but to be honist for what it sounds you would be better off with a defender.
 
depends really whether you want a pure commercial vehicle for local use that will take logs and blocks being chucked in the back..... or something a bit more refined and dual purpose....

i run a disco....it will carry the tools , even a pedestrian lawnmower..... but a ten minute tidy up and i can get 7 people in for a day out.... on the odd occasions i want to carry big dirty stuff i hitch the trailer on.

i considered a 110 but they are more expensive to buy and aint ideal for non work motoring.
 
I's gorra Disco cos it were cheap and I can fit the family in it looked at a galaxy but it dint have enough room couldn't afford a fender so now I gotta rusty Disco to rebuild:D

Yes, that was my thought. I already have a Disco tdi300 and a Freelander. I use the Disco for all the things I described above and it suits me just fine (Freelander is way better in the snow :) )

However, it's my friend who would like the info on comparison before he takes the plunge and buys something.

Am I wrong to think the 110 long wheelbase is much heavier than the Disco?
 
Depends, a CSW will be but a standard van will be around the same I think

I know a pickup is less than a disco though

2.25 T for disco (aprox)

1.8 T for a hi-cap (aprox)
 
i used to have a disco are 2 ilive on mild hill that gets lots of snow both where crap i had to get pulled up hill with a old s3 so i got rid of them then i got the best 4x4 ever delica pulled bus up the hill
then i lost my motor trade so had to start again with the no claims bull just short of 2 grand never had a claim driving 4 20 years but due to 4 years motor trade lost it all
so back to freelander and 2 s3 1 swb 1 safari

I say, lets translate that garble into somewhat more proper english.

Skipping past the nonsense about living up a snowy hill. The important points are:
-I think he is saying he had a mitsubishi Delica (scooby doo wagon) That was the best 4x4 he had.
-But after losing his motor trading business/ no claims for insurance that went with it.
-He got rid of that as it was very expensive to insure.
-So he has gone back to having a Freelander, and 2 series 3's. One Short wheel base, one safari.

I think thats a somewhat translated version of his gobbldy gook!
