I've searched and there doesn't seem to be a thread on this.
I've got a disco 1 v8.
I've got a dog guard (2nd hand but pukka LR item) and a new genuine LR fitting kit.
It now seems I need a special tool to fit the brackets to the sides.
I know I should have checked before but my last car (RR Classic) had the mountings in already so I assumed the disco would as well.
Any ideas anyone, or shall I just sell the bits and get a universal guard?

i drilled n bolted the lr brackets in my disco 1

are you talking about A RIVNUT tool?cos laser do one for about 12 quid,or you could use the old type rawlplug rubber cavity nuts

Universal guards don't normally seem to go high enough...

Thought looking at the 'legs' i got with my S/H guard that the screws were a sort of self tapping hex head thing, just drill an appropriate size oil then wang em in sort o thing...

Mine had already had one fitted though so they went in the receptacle marked BoneE

Definitely a Rivnut tool you need. You'll also need the proper nuts if you don't already have them in the kit.
You can get both from Flea Bay. The tools are quite expensive, so the £12 one sounds a good deal.

Alternatively you can use a spare bolt, a washer and two nuts to install them. You have to put the rivnut into the hole, place both nuts onto the bolt and then the washer. Screw the bolt into the rivnut and then hold the bottom nut. Screw the second nut and this will tighten up the rivnut by compressing it.
It's not easy given the confined area, so the proper tool may be the best method.

...or these will do it,reckons I,if you dont get your hands on a rivnut tool:

VWP - fasteners 1

...also a source of those plastic rivets that hold the back door lip on etc

Thanks for all the info chaps, I now understand what needs to be done.
The rubber insert jobs look like they would work but might not give a very rigid mounting!
I might now be able to borrow the right tool and do it right.
