Hi all,

First thread on here , so a good one to pick your brains, sure you've had this asked before but i can't seem to use the search , not sure why?

So i'm looking for another disco, i had a 200 and 300 tdi years back, basic ,strong engines, go anywhere without too much damage to panels, and spanner work is easy, so much why i like this model.

although the td5 is Aesthetically Pleasing whats it like to work on, and is capable of handling green lanes, and play sites? or should i stay clear.

All tips, hints and advice gratefully appreciated

Martin

I've had both and personally prefer the 300tdi by a long way

In my opinion the TD5 tried a lot of new things with electrics and similar, some worked, some didn't, makes it a lot harder to fix things though (things like the 3 amigos just because a wheel sensor is slightly out)

I sold my TD5 to buy a 300tdi and am much happier with it.

Other's may disagree though.

Oh and :welcome2: :)

Only major thing to keep an eye on the Ecu and stop it getting wet apart from that that are a capable engine, much more tuneable than a tdi

my last was a 200 and now have v8 disco 2 i like both but i do perfer the v8 and she can handle the lanes wwith ease tho i dont take her swiming but loves the mud

did you struggle with lanes in a 200tdi?

well i have a TD5 and I love the engine. Yes it is more complicated than a TDI but once you maintain it properly and understand it (purchase the manual) it is a great machine.

There's a lot to an engine that isn't in the manual (workshop manual I assume), just because you have one, doesn't make it simple as there will always be more stuff to go wrong.

in my opinion if your after somat to chuck the kids in to go to school, doing motorway miles/commuting with a bit of light greenlaning or you need a decent tow vehicle and you don't mind paying a bit more if something goes wrong then get the TD5

if your after a workhorse that you can chuck through anything n you ain't gonna be to bothered if the body work ain't perfect, you don't do a lot of motorway miles and want something that can be fixed on the drive with spanners then get the 300tdi

I love my 300tdi its not as reliable as my mates td5 but then thats cos I know i can fix it myself so i don't mind doing a LOT more in it which obviously, on a 20 year old motor is gonna take its toll on parts/bushes etc etc... its not as "luxurious" because it doesn't have the sound deadening n stuff but its a lot more practical for what I use it for

not really but then it coped with deep water better than the v8 but i like the v8 for the power and it really does pull well did get stuck in the 200 in a few plces but seem to get through in v8 just has that little bit more

this is my first v8 landy only had this and 200 so dont really have a lot to compare to
