Hi there

I've got a 1998 300tdi disco. I've got a problem with fuel injection pump were it sounds like it's rattling I've changed the fuel filter and the noise stopped for a couple of days but the came back so I changed the fuel lift pump but still noise fuel injection pump so not sure on what else it could be. And advise would be much appreciated
Thanks

First thing I would do is check the timing belt, it could be a worn out tensioner making the noise,
Put a stethoscope or long screw driver on the pump while running to make sure the noise is coming from
The injection pump,

I had the timing belt done about 6months ago and had a brand new tensioner put on it when the belt was done. I will do the screwdriver test when I get home and see what that comes back with and let you know.

A leak somewhere letting air in to the fuel line

Air in the fuel will cause the pump to make horrendous noises :)

Hi everyone just to give you and update on the noisie fuel injection pump. I decided to take the fuel line off from the fuel filter to the bottom off the lift pump as it seemed abit damp round the nut. I put the fuel line back on and tightened it up again and the noise as stopped for now. So I csn only guess I didn't put the fuel line on properly.

But if any change then I will let you know.

Thanks for everyone's advice it was much appreciated

Hope you’ve sorted it!

This may be helpful or not...

I had air ingress a few years ago and it ended up being a doughty washer on the sedimenter, but it took some finding as there was no fuel leaking out and it didn’t show until I pressurised the tank, anyway, I now run a bit of clear pipe in the fuel line from the filter to the pump, just got about 3” clear FUEL pipe with 2 inserts to go in the black fuel pipe (8mm I think) and a pair of little clamps, cost prob less than £5 but I now have a quick check for everything before that point

Just something to think about

Hi towsey

Thanks for that I will have a look in to that as the noise form the fuel injection pump as come back. I've just ordered some injector washers as well so will se what that does.

There’s always something with these things!

Obviously it won’t show problems in or after the pump but still worth having, unless you like to put the red stuff thru it then it would be a bit of a give away ha

Hi all sorry its late getting you all updated regards the nosie fuek injection pump. I finally managed to get it into my mate garage earirler today to have a loot at charging the fuel sedimenter for a new one. It turns out I didn't need to change it as when we opened the screw at the Boyton off the old sedimenter loads of water and gunk came out once we drained the old sedimenter uod water and just deisel was coming out the pump as now stopped rattling. So I've ever anyone as problems with there fuel injection pump being nosie the just try draining the fuel sedimenter first.
