Hi all,
I own a 2003 disco2 td5 gs with 32,000 miles on clock. Recently i have noticed when taking off from standstill and in particular at junctions the vehicles moves off, losses power and then a surge of power develops. Also at around 50mph and 2-2500 revs i am experiencing what can only be described as a judder/miss from the engine. Ihave had my independant LR garage look at the problem and out the vehicle on a diagnostic , but they say there is nothing wrong. Can anyone help. I have looking on the forum and from previous threads i am suspecting the ecu loom and or the MAF sensor/meter. Any thoughts would be gratefully received.
 
sounds like maf sensor but would expect that to show on diagnostic try unplugging it and drive it a bit if it feels better then theres the culprit, if you need a replacement buy a genuinne one from LR the copied ones dont tend to last very long.
the oil in loom is easy to check, just pull the red plug off the ecu if oil is present then the injector loom needs replacing again not a big job
 
sounds like either turbo overboosting or oil contamination in the injector wiring loom.
 
Does overboost put the car into " limp home " mode ?.

I,ve never had it on a TD5, but I had it on a VW van a few years back, and that put it in " limp " mode till you " refresh " the ECU by turning off the ingnition.

In severe cases yes. In less serious cases it can lead to power fluctuations.

Sorry for your woes but replace with 300tdi and you'll be ok for a few hundred thou:D
 
hello i have had similiar fault on my td5 can you tell me if you have the prob fixed thx derek


Looks like another " one poster " merchant. ( dinodev ).

He probably got it fixed, and couldnt be arsed to report back the fault, consequently, not contributing to the " helpfull " info source of the LZ which he wanted to only " take " from !.

Not how it should work !.

I recommend cleaning the MAF, AAP and MAP sensors anyway, whatever other remedies are applied. I say this as I cleaned these sensors on my TD5 Defender as part of a general all round check after I got the vehicle. In particular, I was astonished what a difference just cleaning the MAP sensor made. It was completely clogged with carbon. I used a can of electronics cleaner spray from Halfords on all of them.

Blank off the EGR and your MAP sensor will stay clean along with your inlet manifold and inlet valves.
 
Can only endorse Shifty1962's good advice - my clogged MAP sensor finally convinced me to blank off and remove the EGR valve on my TD5. It doesn't take too long to do and is well worth it.

Its a no brainer as far as I'm concerned. Why feed all that black gungy ****e back through your engine? The boffins that came up with the idea of EGRs dont have to service or keep the engines running properly once things get clogged up. First thing I did even before my shiny new engine was fired up for the first time was dump the EGR gubbins. I've never yet had an engine fail its MOT for not having an EGR fitted.

100% agree done it to all my desiels, lets face it the only point of the egr is to please the men in brussel and there eu regulations of crap.

Basic engine knowledge tell you more cold compressed air equals more fuel and more power and torque, hot dirt exhausted air with hardly any oxygen left in it full of suit just equals a dirty inlet manifold and aglogged up under performing engine both form power and fuel economy.

Its a no brianer anyone with the er valve still on is nuts!!!!!!!!!!!!:eek:
 
Looks like a pretty unanimous verdict on the EGR then. I'd like to clean out the intercooler and hoses too (or replace them) but it's sandwiched between the radiator and the aircon condenser. But that's off topic and maybe I'll ask for advice on all that on a new thread........

ouchie, mine had similar problem. I would accelerate after a toll in the highway, and it would seem to "cough" for about 2 seconds or so....:confused: Wouldnt for a while, and again...

after some time and advise, checket the ECU and would find oil in the box !! :eek:.

Changed the short set of cables that go into the injectors; cleaned the long set that connects to the ECU thoroughly, and never again ! :D
