I have been getting the intermittent clicking on my TD5 for a while, but always started eventually.
Over the last couple of days it then seemed to struggle starting before this morning when there was nothing. The relay seems to be working ok. It nothing from the starter motor.

Thinking about doing the refurbish kit rather than going with a new motor?

What’s the honest opinion?
 
I would remove starter and strip it out first. I fitted a repair kit which didn't fix it. On further investigation the brushes were knackered.
Fitted a new Denso at £160 which isn't so bad.
 
I fitted the contacts kit and it has been fine since.
The "nut from hell" is the issue so I put up a thread about how to do it, I'll see if I can find it and put up a link.

Thanks for the link, think it might be beyond me amd my limited amount of tools. Shame really as I would find the actual refurbishment a doodle.
 
I have read that some folks have done the refurb without removing the starter.
Took mine off ok and used a refurb kit several months ago and been fine since.
Roughly where are you in the country in case there's someone close to help.

It is said it CAN be done in situ, but I didn't fancy the idea.

One temporary thing you can do is to take the nuts off the outside part of the contacts where you connect the wires, (batt disconnected first!) then under them tighten up the nuts there that hold the contacts to the solenoid, I was surprised to find that mine were a bit loose when I was doing the job. Once you've tightened them and put the rest of it back together you may be surprised.

If you own a Landy you will eventually own the tools! They aren't expensive for this job, and the method does work. Others jumped on with their own methods which worked for them. These again involved tools of slightly different sizes to mine (Oooh, Matron!)

Some will be in the Haynes, I daresay all will be in RAVE somewhere, I'll dig my Haynes out and have a look, wait on....

For some reason I am having trouble opening up RAVE.

Starter motor - Td5 27 Nm (20 lbf.ft)
Starter motor solenoid 10 Nm (7 lbf.ft)
Starter motor - V8 44 Nm (32 lbf.ft)

Ahh there is my problem, got a basic socket and no torque wrench😭
 
Finally got Rave open.
the nut connecting the lead to the starter solenoid should be at 10 Nms or 7 lbf ft.

TBH, when I did mine I didn't use a torque wrench, I don't think. Certainly not on the "nut from hell" it wouldn't have made any sense doing it via a U/J.
But a dial indicator one from Halfrauds or simla is really cheap.

Good advice given me by an old mechanic once. "Buy a cheap socket set, then replace any socket you break with a better make one. "

I once had a deal with Machine Mart where if I bought some tool boxes I got a huge set of tools free. You need to look out for offers like that. ;)
