Hi, I'd like some advice from people in the know regards my Disco2 please......the engine cooler is leaking oil and due to its high mileage (174k) Im wondering if its worth fixing this or going for an engine replacement. The engine seems fine but I cant decide whether its worth fixing it and get some more miles out of the engine or bite the bullet and do an engine change. Unfortunately I cant afford a Turner engine and would have to try and source one off ebay for example. The problem I think is that 70% of its time is spent towing. Any advice appreciated.
Thanks.
Graeme

Blimey how much is an oil cooler if you are considering buying an engine instead?
Chances are an Ebay engine will have the same or another problem anyway.

Its more the cost of fitting it - Ive quoted around £400 in labour vs using the money to fit an engine with lower mileage instead. But trying to find one thats not got problems too is a gamble too, like you say.

Never mentioned how many hours but it seems that all the gubbins from the right hand side of the engine (if youre looking from the front) need to come out. Sorry, am no mechanic. I was going to buy the kit and hope the casing is ok.

Is it a local independent Land Rover place doing the work?
Just been reading up and apparently the oil can leak into the coolant when the cooler fails.

Yes, its an independent. I dont think the cooler has failed, I think its the gasket. The car does around 25k miles/year and with the mileage at the moment Im thinking if its worth doing.

Repair it engines last forever
This is where I get so much different advice - the chap that has looked after my Defender 300tdi and now the TD5 disco reckons the TD5s are a bag of cack and I should get a Disco 3/4 but I get told these are crap too.

Not that hard, and certainly not really an issue that requires an engine replacement.

He only wants you to get a D3/4 as he can charge more when it goes wrong!

To be fair they are a bag of cack, but a pretty reliable bag of cack.

Turbo and manifold are actually pretty easy to remove, might be worth getting the manifold skimmed whilst you have it off.
