Hi guys,

Does anyone have any tips for freeing up a propshaft sliding joint? It seems to to stuck solid, but woundered if it could be saved.:confused2:

Failing that, does anyone have a spare rear prop they would like to part with in the essex area?;)

Thanks
Tom

The rear prop sliding joint slides when the suspension goes up and down. So re attach it and get a load of ya bigger mates to bounce on the back. Should give enough force to free it. Make sure you grease it too.

As for a rear prop i have one in my shed. Do you have the 4 or 3 bolt prop? this one is a 3 bolt one. have a few spare donuts too. In birmingham though....

caution with the above advice, i once had a disco that had pulled the rear output bearing out of the transfer case because the rear prop was seized, so i wouldnt advise the above, just in case.

however.

remove the prop and pull away the plstic 'nut' and the rubber seal, and get some plusgas/wd40/ in there

if the prop is out, then bang it on the floor pile driver style to knock the short end in.

then get a lump hammer and **** the shaft yoke to knock the short end out again. this will takes many hours, sometimes even days of constant hammering. advise your neighbours to go on holiday.

eventually itr will start moving.

keep lubing/pile driving/hammering until it moves enough to pull the short end right out.

NB htere are 2 lines marked on the prop to show which way the sort end fits into the prop, it has to remain in the plane. if you cant find them, makie your own so that you fit it back together the same way.

pull the short end out and inspect the Rislan coating (thats the celar plastic)

if its all won out and split, your prop is best part o' shagged. replace ideally.

if it looks good and in one piece, wd40 the internal splines in the shaft and wire brush in there to clean the splines, and grease up/clean/regrease the splines on the short end.

fit it back together and it 'should' be like a wizard's sleeve.

cheers

MrPDude;
Unfortunatly I have a 4 bolt/'doughnutless' prop, thanks for the offer tho!

Mr Noisy;
Seeing as the prop is already off, I'll get the 'fine-tuning hammer' out. I did wonder about this method, and as it stands I need another prop so have nothing to lose!

Thanks guys!

I used this hammering technique, the prop held by a large woodworker vice and hammering back and forth till it went out, however I was lucky enough to get it out in maybe 20 travels and a large wd40 can
now I'll remember using a large hammer horizontally for a while knocks your back spine for a full week !

good to know!

Thanks for clearing that up
