a mate is after buying a disco 1 300 tdi the later the better for towing a car transporter trailer and wants to know which is best manual box or auto.

I like my auto for towing as it's smoother. Just don't like not having control of the gears and use my manual for everyday use. Buy one of each

If your towing any weight an auto would feel more gutless when pulling away or going up hills. In such situations you also run the risk of fluid overheating problems, especially on an older car. A manual transmission would be far more reliable and give better performance and economy.
