Hi folks,

Changing discs on disco 1 (rear)

I have removed the hub and half axle, calliper, lock nuts and washers, outer bearings fell out, but the hub assembly and disc brake won't come off the stub axle!

It spins smoothly, i can rock it good inch or two, but it will not slide off the stub axle like the other side did. I have pulled and pulled, but no luck!

Any suggestions?

Sounds like something has stuck itself to the stub axle. This can occasionally happen if one of the inner races has spun on the stub axle and welded itself on. Can you get a lever in behind to prise it off? or do you have a puller that could bear against the stub axle and pull the hub? Sometimes you can yank the hub off and then have to grind and chisel the inner race to get it unstuck.

If the worst happens a new stub axle and hub aren't prohibitively expensive.

Thanks for the reply. I'll give it a good bit of abuse today to try and get it off then. I wondered if there was something obvious i was missing and i didn't want to cause damage. If i replaced every bit of the car that didn't go to plan, i would have a brand new car haha

What @Brown says .. uber violence required in the knowledge that the stub is probably nackered now anyway, and it's possible the hub is too .. :)

If you have a spare wheel, without a tyre on so it ain't too cumbersome, replace it and use that as a puller/wiggler.

There's one here where the debris from a disintegrating wheel bearing has worn a groove and ridge in the stub axle. Click the 'view attachment' bit in the quote to see a picture.

Ok, progress so far.

Rear prop repaired with the worlds most expensive UJ bought locally for £37.00. Anyway it works and can go back on. Will make up a Paddock order next time, even with £16 postage it would have been cheaper.

Rear cross member ordered from Black Sheep off road :D and big order of essentials from Paddock to replace stuff like thisView attachment 97392
Yep, absolutely chuffed. So new stub and hub ordered, as well as new disks, and other sundries.

Not really much needed mechanically to be fair, but nothing that couldn't have been avoided had the PO's not driven it it round with a collapsed rear wheel bearing for a good few miles.

When the bits arrive later in the week, I'll try and get some better photos of the progress.

So maybe yours has something similar that's preventing the inner bearing sliding over it. Keep yanking and something will give eventually

Nothing is stuck on a Land Rover. All that is usually needed is judicious applications of force with a weighted object!

Ok, so i need to expand a little given what i've just found.

The Near Side: When taking the hub cap (and half axle) off, i found one sheared off bolt. Everything came apart ok and i have ordered up a new hub assembly (as the bolt is well and truly stuck in there!).

I took this as an opportunity to change the discs and pads, so had to start on the other side.

OffSide: I took this side apart last night and found the hub assembly and disc brake stuck as discussed above. I gave it a good amount of effort this morning and it popped off, leaving the bearings on the stub axle as can be seen in the first photo. The stub is all scored, so i'm going to order a new one.

On inspection of the two hub assembly (in the hope that i can keep the Offside one) i have noticed something strange. The NearSide has a ledge, where as the Offside looks ok! See photos below.

1) I am wondering if the ledge in the NS has had something to do with the bolt shearing off? Any ideas what could have caused this?
2) i am assuming that OF hub is the correct shape etc? It looks ok to me on the inside, but what are the thoughts for saving this one?

The shelf looks like it might be the inner bearing race. Rollers have broken and scored the bearing surfaces badly .. it needs drifting out. Lay the stud face down and use a longish cold chisel to whack the race out. It's possible it's OK underneath, but I wouldn't hold me breath!

Yes, similar problems to mine, on the link above, if you can drift the bearing seat out the hub may be reusable, but by the time you sort that out, and get the broken bolt out, it may be easier at about £50 to get a new hub. Mine wasn't that bad, but I also had problems with the rear seal seat being damaged so I fitted the new hub.

Bottom one looks OK. The upper hub looks very scored on the inside. Is that the one you're thinking of replacing? Might be just as well to do so. There's some fantastic rust on everything too. Has the Land Rover lived at the seaside? Good luck in getting those stub axle retaining bolts out. It might be a good idea to order some more of those while you're about it too.

So the photo with the shelf (NS hub assembly) is being replaced anyway as the bolt is stuck inside it. That new hub is on the way! The 'shelf' isn't the bearing seat though, its been carved away into the thickness of the steel! Bad photo perhaps.

I have just cleaned up the hub in the bottom photo (OF hub assembly) which is the one that was stuck and the bearings are welded onto the stub axle. It looks fine to me so i'm going to re-use it.

I was worried about getting the stub axle retaining bolts out, Brown, but i managed to be patient, cleaned them and WD'd them, and they came out no problem at all! A contrast to everything else i have touched on the car in recent days!

Cheers for the help folks
