Hi Guys,

Changed the transfer box today for a Defender one to bring the on-road ratio down a bit. However, I noticed when taking the old one out, it has a lump of metal bolted to the box.

Does anyone know if this is for harmonic dampening of something in particular? I haven't put it back on and haven't noticed any issues, but I'm curious to know what it's there for

I cant answer your question bud, but are u selling ur disco one? Want to put one in my defender! :)

Nah sorry, it's going into a Disco 1 which is going to have an Ashcroft diff fitted to it (the diff ratios are different, so the transfer ratios are fine)

Funny how Discovery owners want a Defender box and Defender owners want Disco boxes, haha! :D

I take it your is mainly a road Defender with standard size tyres?

Doh!! Haha you're right! Grass is always greener!! :D

I run 235/85's so not to different from standard, spend time off road and green laning alot, but I'm always in low box anyway in these circumstances! She's my daily drive, work and play vehicle, so when I have to commute a find her pretty revvy and have to sit at 45-50 to keep the noise down. She's remapped to so will happily pull a 1.2, and my oil seal is weeping so going to have to have it off soon anyway!

Best of luck with the D1! :)

Best bet is speak to someone who wants to do the swap on a Disco too ;)

I changed my D2 LT230 to the Defender LT230 because I run 33" tyres. Pulling away is a chore and you need to keep the revs up when changing gear with the standard box, otherwise when you engage the next gear, you have to wait for the turbo to build pressure again. Basically, it makes it gutless unless you drive it a bit harder all the time. Off-road the ratios are fine for me though, so I don't see the point in modifying the diff ratios or the low box gear ratio. :)

However now she runs absolutely lovely. :D
