As some of you may know I'm swapping out my 2.25 petrol engine. The "old"
engine had a combined oil filler/breather cap, yet the "new" one (which Im
told is an earlier type of engine but still a 3 MB) has the oil filler at
the side with a seperate breather.

Becuase I'm porting over my air filter, I'm planning to take the side oil
filler pipe off, blank it off with the blanking plate from the old engine
and then use the cap/breather thats attached to the air filter.

Is this OK to do or are there issues I should be aware of?

thanks a lot,
Paul

This engine has a number of different engine breather setups, but there are
basically two - one with a side pipe with a breather on it and another
breather on top of the rocker cover, the other with a positive crankcase
ventilation valve into the sump via a hose onto the side plate and a pipe
from the rocker cover to the air cleaner inlet elbow and just a filler on
the side pipe. In both cases there is provision for a flow of air through
the internals of the engine as well as a pressure relief. Without this you
will get condensation within the engine especially in a damp climate and
for short runs. Where the oil is added is immaterial, but you must have two
points of ventilation, top and bottom, and they must have some form of air
cleaning (if one has PCV it is not necessary to have this one filtered).

ah, my old engine had a pipe going into the sump, and a pipe from the rocker
cover cap to the air cleaner elbow.

Can I have a breather on the oil filler pipe cap, and a pipe on the rocker
cover cap going to the air inlet pipe? Otherwise, I'll have a hole in my
air cleaner pipe...unless I shut it off of course....

Hi all -
I'm thinking or replacing my engine. But not sure what I have.
Here are some pics of my engine.
Can anyone tell me what type of engine I have. It is in my 1970 Series 2A LAnd Rover, and it is a 2 1/4 litre petrol, I am assuming. What else to I need to know about its specs?

Thanks!
Mike Shaw

its a 2 1/4 petrol what do you want to know, you could just bolt in any 2 1/4 petrol or diesel in or a 2.5 petrol

I guess my next step is to know if my compression ratio is 7:1 or 8:1.

How can I tell if I have a dynamo or a generator?

Thanks!
Mike

Update - I have an alternator. Lucas LRA100, Part 23715. I think it is not charging properly, so I'll test it. It may be the belt. This colder weather might have affected it.
