Hi all
Happy Christmas to on and all.

Slight issue with my Disco Td5 (1999 180000 on the clock) again. I noticed oil over the inner wall of my nearside front wheel. So (due to lack of time) ran it in to my local Land rover man who diagnosed it as drive shaft oil seal. Left it with him and collected it a couple of days later. Only to notice it's still leaking. So took it back and got told it might need a new drive shaft, so let them crack on and collected it on Monday. On Wednesday I had a look underneath to notice yer again I have diff oil all over the lower ball joint ad inner tyre wall. Phoned them up and agreed to return the car in the new year. Has anybody got an idea what this could be. Many thanks.
 
Welcome to the front drive shaft oil seal nightmare... it's a too long story but in a nutshell: somebody messed up something and the oil seals are too tight from factory, i ended up machining the shafts to get rid of that leak after a dozen of failed seals of all brands and new shafts, hubs fitted, the whole story here(take a tea and read all and you'll understand): http://www.aulro.com/afvb/discovery...s-front-diff-seals-leaking-2.html#post2120554

If I'm or the garage unanable to get the right seals, I'm feeling the quicker/best option will be either a) replace complete axle or b) as the car is old and high mileage perhaps look for a younger model. I hear you say that the later is a bit drastic, but it's been something myself and she who must be obeyed have been discussing over the past year.
 
This seal problem might reoccur with any model or on any axle as long as the seal's ID is not larger with 0.5mm than the mud shield's OD so if you can't find proper seal better get the shaft machined as i did and it's been dry ever since
