Ok folks Im new to the landrover scene and have just purchased a dico 300 tdi. Can somebody please explain in simple terms what the diff lock- high low gear knob does and when i would use it. Sorry for the basic question but as I said Im a newbie :)

Ok, your new, so, politely i say to thee.....SEARCH! Its been covered by everyone, a million times, and the info is out there my friend. And before the hounds arrive, don't for the love of god ask what are the biggest tires you can fit!!!:eek::eek:

hi/lo is crash box type selection so best done when your stood ,you just have a choice of all gears but in low at much lower speeds ,transfer box as well as hi/low also hasa a center diff as well as one in each axle enabling you to drive about on 4wd on the road without getting transmission wound up ,for slippery condition you can lock the center diff as without locking all drive can be lost through 1 spinning wheel by pushing the lever towards passenger side whether its in hi or low ,this means both axles must have drive so you would need a front and rear wheel to spin for drive to be lost ,diff lock can be applied when moving but dont do it when one or more wheels is slipping ,lever compresses a sprong in the box so you may push lever over but it wont select till its all aligned likewise you can pull lever back to disengage but it it may stick in till you reverse a little or move a few yards forward

basically low is for offroad or really heavy towing. Heavy like a house. hi is for normal driving. N is neutral. Difflock is for off road, slippery conditions where traction is likely to be lost. not for on road.

take it somewhere muddy, wiggle the little joystick and see what happens :D

But maybe go with a mate just in case

i use low when reversing a trailer, cos youre going that bit slower youve got more time to think about which way to waggle the steering wheel
