Probably my lack of knowledge,commonly known as ignorance but does my 1996 diesel auto have locking differentials for off road?
If so how does one engage them,it?

All P38's came with a Viscous Locking Central Differential...

Engages automatically when one axle starts turning faster than the other indicating a loss of grip to the faster axle...

Inside the Transfer Box is the Viscous Coupling, normally when both axles are turning at almost the same speed, the fluid flows nicely between rotors which are attached to each propshaft end inside the VC unit...when one starts turning faster, this churns up the fluid making it more viscous (thicker) and this in turns starts to drag the other rotor along with it to try and match the speed...essentially locking the two propshafts together.

All this happens automatically and no driver input is needed....the front and rear axle diffeerentials do not have locking ability as the P38 has traction control this is achieved by the faster spinning wheel is braked to essentially lock the diff up and transmit power to the wheel with most traction (for those later models with 4 wheel TC) for the two wheel TC, only the rears are fitted with this braking traction control system...

You can fit ARB or Detroit lockers to the P38 at considerable cost!
 
no ,no lockers in axle diffs or center diff ,but you do have a viscous coupling which locks center diff and so means both axles are driven
