Hey, I did water pump, viscous, thermostat on Sunday and the fan is terribly loud, I've compared it to old fan and blades are different angle so I would like to fit older blades onto new viscous coupling and rather than undo rad pipes and bleed again I wondered could the cowling be moved back enough to slip fan through gap?

Fan will come out once its off the water pump, just be careful of the rad.

I ment between cowling and rad bud, leaving cowling pipes etc in place

Fan is removed along with cowl.

Well I can confirm the fan easily comes out without removing cowling or undoing radiator pipes so I've changed old BMW fan blades onto new viscous coupling and its just as bloody loud also the fan seems stiff hot or cold so I think its a bad viscous unit

That is not the correct coupling. M 51 Fan blades are fixed to the coupling hub not bolted on and the hub and fan cannot be removed without removing the cowl at the same time. Your viscous will be from a Disco.

Believe me the viscous fan on the P38 M 51 Is not bolted together it is riveted. Your fan is from a Disco.

So are the originals in that condition. Mine only fires up loud in hot summer temperatures in traffic.

I have another emergency one that is locked constantly, it is loud especially first thing pulling off people think it is the sound of the engine

I was worried it would damage engine , I don't think it will now but I ordered another coupler anyway

It doesn't seem to spin very freely when cold so is it likely to be an issue?

Normally on a cold start up the fan will whoosh and free up as the fan is stabilized, as the engine reaches a certain temp the fan will stiffen and become effective and loosen as the temp drops. While idling at a hot temperature you can hear the fan start to lock and release.

Its just a heavy whooshing noise all the time cold or hot and its a new fan I thought p38 but turns out its a disco 1
