Just a thought: the timing on most diesels will tend to become retarded over time, as the gears wear. This is evident from a loss of power and loads of grey smoke. The timing can be advanced to a point where there is a lot of extra power and the smoke clears, but;
How can you tell at which point the optimum setting is reached? what are the signs of timing which is too far advanced, and what are the long term effects, if any?
Would appreciate any info that anyone has - I'm on a mission to squeeze every last drop o' power from the old powerplant

this has been cover one or twice before. i would suggest that one partake a search of this fine site. there is what is known as a search function which when used in conjugtion with suitable words will display a list of posts and threads that will reveal the information one requires.
