Hi I have a 90 fitted with a disco 300tdi engine and after a run yesterday there was diesel sprayed all ove the back door which must have come from the exhaust, it starts and runs fine a little puff of black smoke on starting but not while running. Anybody have any ideas what to look for??

Cheers Andy

Why do you think it must have come from the exhaust?
If you're sure it is diesel then check you're tank, fuel lines, filter in fact the whole system for leaks. It can leak in the engine bay then passing wind can take it underneath to the back of the vehicle and deposit on the rear.

Due to the defenders 'exceptional' aerodynamics, anything that leaks will probably end up on the back door. Have a good look undernaeth. Hope this helps, Dave

I concur. It aint from yer egg-zorst. It's likely to be a fuel pipe rubbed through or loose sender etc.

Have had a good snout about underneath and its look like there is a leak of something above the transfer/gearbox and it has sprayed all over the rear axle as well as the door couldn't make it where it was coming from or what it was tho

How old is your 90? if the fuel tank is under the drivers seat, pull out the seat base, and the lid over the tank, and have a look for chaffed/ damaged fuel return. If it was the supply pipe you would also have bad starting/ poor running etc as it would draw air in.

Have any oil levels dropped? ie. engine/ gearbox/ transfer box.

A good sniff (or taste, if sir prefers) of the back door you give a rough idea where you should be looking.

I have checked underneath and the transfer box is covered in a thin golden colour fluid could be hydraulic fluid??? have checked tank pipes and sender they are all dry, clutch master cylinder is dry too, all brake pipes seem ok cant see any visible leaks around the tranfer/gearbox so I'm stumped to where its leaking from.................anyone got any ideas??

wot he said ^^^^^^^^

a small dab on the end of a finger will do. You don't need to drink a pint of it.;)
