Grrrrrr

Anyone ever seen inside or know what is included in the Land Rover genuine head gasket kit, part number STC3694?

I think the part number might have changed to RA20008 for some of the after-market kits. I tried one once and remember that a) it didn't include the head gasket, arguably the most important bit and b) was missing some of the other bits required. I'm wondering, given the massive price difference, if the genuine kit might be a little more comprehensive!

For the record, I've found the scrap of paper where I was working out what I needed last time I did the head. Might be useful for someone:

o-ring for the metal coolant pipe that goes to the heater, the one that is held with one flimsy bolt to the front of the engine by the thermostat housing. Not even sure if it takes an o-ring because I cannot find a part-number anywhere?

Turbo gasket = STC2209 (~£5)
Turbo bolts (were 12 point, I think) = PYP100650L

Camshaft front cover plate o-ring = STC2219? (~£5)
Camshaft end cover o-ring = STC2220 (~£5)
Camshaft sprocket bolt = STC2141 (~£10)

Timing chain tensioner access plug washer ?
Timing chain tensioner & guide rail bolt o-rings?

Cylinder Head Gasket = STC2031G (~£50) - 3 dots = 1.87 mm
Cylinder head bolts (14 and they have a female Torx E16 head rather than 12 mm 12 point) = LDY000040 (~£25)

Exhaust manifold gasket (with heat shield) = STC3696 (~£10)
Exhaust manifold gasket x4 items = STC3697 (~£10) - I'm not sure if the original one on #1 cylinder wasn't a slightly different shape but probably doesn't matter.

Inlet manifold gaskets x6 = STC2203 (~£10)

So that's everything I would expect in the kit. About £120 in total, maybe a bit less. You'd need a bit more if you were actually rebuilding the head.

A good place for diagrams and part numbers etc is the chassis jlr store

That seems to be the same as lrcat but without the russian text.

I'm going to ring a BMW dealer tomorrow and see what their prices are like!

Well, just for the record, the BMW original part is £50 cheaper than Land Rover! However, it has to be a special order from Germany and will take up to 2 weeks to arrive. £125 (including the VAT) but no mention made of whether import duties are due on top of that.

EDIT: the BMW part number is 11122245427. I had to find it for them as the dealer was bloody useless.

Is the land rover part more easily available? Worth it if so, especially with unknown duty extras

Yes, it is. And both the Land Rover dealer and Rimmer Bros know what an M51 engine is and how to find the part-number.

I've gone after-market again though. Mahle this time. Less than a third of the price. Surely they cannot mess a gasket up?!
