Hi folks
I’ve a Td4 freelander which has started to loose power and a slight knocking sound coming from the engine. The engine is vibrating a bit when you look at it and it seems like there may be diesel in the oil. The oil is very thin and was only changed 1000 miles ago. Any ideas on where to start looking greatfully received.
Thanks Warren.

I'd be looking at the high pressure pump seals first. Be careful as if they leakyou can get diesel shot into the crankcase and the engine runs out of control.... Even when switched off. Check oil level and if increasing don't run engine until you have found problem.

Cheers Andy.
Also get a slight overrun when turned off occasionally.

Is it the hi pressure fuel pump or the distributor pump you think.
Pcv filter was changed about 10000miles ago.

Filter due soon. What do you call the distributor pump?? I mean the hp pump on front of engine. It can spew diesel into crankcase and engine just sucks it in causing run on. If you are already getting this then you have your problem.

what is this thing ? I thought it was a high pressure fuel pump.

What I know as a distributor pump is the thing that sends the fuel to the injectors at the right time. Perhaps that is a bit old school.

Looks like the vacuum pump !
Common rail diesel has same pressure to fuel rail and injectors do the work in letting fuel in when needed.

This is HP pump, driven from timing chain and is between radiator and engine block.

You need a special tool to retain the chain and release the drive shaft.
Read up in Rave manual before you start or check out a you tube on 'how to'.

Next related problem ! Changed all the pump seals and the injector seals , starts ok and revs to around 1750 rpm sweet as a nut. Rev it to about 2500 rpm and it seems to go into limp mode with engine management light on. Do I need to bleed any injector pipes or reset anything. It’s a 2002 if that has any relevance..‍

It could be the low pressure fuel pump isn't sufficient to maintain the low supply.

There’s a pump in the rear wheel arch and one in the tank apparently. Which do you think is the cause ?

Just unplugged the rail pressure sensor. Ran it plugged it back in and it runs like a new un 225000 miles best car I’ve ever had. Thanks for your help guys.

It depends on the year. Pre 2003 had 2 low pressure pumps, post 2003 have just one.

The rail pressure sensor plug is known to corrode, so re-seating it might well have cured that for a while.

It had a new plug and loom about two months ago. I think it was just the fact of turning it off and on again
