Hi all.

SWMBO's Skoda is supposed to get 60+mpg but has not managed more than 45ish in its first 2 years. It gets decent runs most of the time on the daily commute and the previous one was supposed to be less economical but performed better.

Is it worth getting a tuner to give it a diagnostic? I am posting here because I know so many forum members get remaps, diagnostic tests done, etc.

Any advice welcome. If we can find out what is causing the problem, we can get the dealer to do it under warranty. Every request so far has met with vague responses or suggestions that it is down to driving style.:frusty:
 
Is that the Skoda Fabia with the 1.9TDi Golf engine in it?

I guess if it is really short journeys with starting and stopping and the engine never really gets hot then 45mpg might be about right. On a journey I'd expect more like 60mpg. A friend of mine had one and even chipped with nitrous and a bigger turbo and methanol colling it was still getting 40mpg!

Get her some lighter shoes. Depends where she is driving it, how she drives it. Around town, short journeys, stop start in traffic knocks hell out of fuel comsumption figures.
 
No, Octavia 1.6 CR TDI. SHould get 62mpg. Used to get nearly 50 out of the old 1.9, only changed to get much better economy. Not happy, 2 years is long enough to run the damn thing in! Driving is mixed, usually a good run on the commute to work and back.
 
Same issue with Nagger's Corsa 1.3CDTi... supposed to average 80-odd mpg on the combined cycle, but won't get better than 55mpg.

These small diesel engines simply can't match, in real world driving conditions, the figures derived from testing done in ideal conditions...
 
The usual cause for modern diesels giving rubbish economy is the journey the car travels on is long enough to cause DPF generation to start but not long enough for it to complete or it's used on very, very short journeys. Check the engine oil level (that it's not too high) and smell it for diesel contamination. If the level is above the H mark, drain and replenish immediately - do not use the car!
 
what you are supposed to get (owner handbook figures) and reality driving are not related i have never seen a vehicle to match the rated mpg. most modern vehicles will have pre and post injection which is also using fuel with no major benefit to the running of the vehicle . my father has a golf diesel which is returning about 55mpg his old bora diesel was giving 64mpg . so while modern injection systems with pre and post injection are cleaner for the air we breathe they are wasting fuel its a no win situtation(sorry for the rant)
 
Larger diesels tend to give around what they're supposed to... Some even do better! My P38 beats its quoted combined figures by a significant margin... Both on the dash and tank-to-tank.
 
None of these modern cars are actually tested 'on the road' for mpg.
Nowadays the manufacturers are allowed to do emissions tests, collect the emission gases, and then calculate a theoretical set of mpg figures from this data.

They go on a rolling road with a predetermined set simulated run, manuals are held in certain gears, autos are allowed to change as they please - hence autos often giving better official economy than manuals.

That said I always get near or better the "official" mpg for most cars I drive if I'm in a fuel saver mindset. Very few women or novice drivers get good mpg despite driving slowly because they tend to drive reactively (to the car in front) needless throttle/brake/throttle/brake rather than backing off and reading the road ahead.
 
only had it since last saturday, but brim to brim so far woks out at 32mpg, and the computer readout said 32.5mpg, so not to bad, the long trip to spain will tell me better!!

I have had two L322, the first did 28.8 over 60,000 miles and the second does 25.8. Could not understand it, but now realise I drove the first most of the time and I virtually never drive the current one which is exclusively used my my wife.
 
Octavia is a big car for a 1.6 diesel to pull about. Could be about right as it will be struggling to accelerate.

left home at 1 oclock in the afternoon (wednesday)with just under 3/4 of a tank and drove to chunnel, landed in france at 1720, then set no toll roads in the satnav!! just outside reims spotted a station at 1.28euro a litre so brimmed it,then drove clear across france and way past san sebastion before i brimmed it again,(1.35euro a litre)then drove all the way across Spain to end up at my house at 19.20,still with 135miles range showing! anyway when i had recovered and unloaded the humoungous amount of gear it was carrying, sat down and worked it out, result?
34.2 to the gallon, and computer showing it was 34.5 average fuel consumption,
Now im pretty happy with that!
strange thing is the rangie is so comfortable it actually beat my best time for the drive by 3 hours!! it took jut 26hours to drive 1,487 miles didnt need to stop and sleep as i do normally in a standard car, stepped out huged the mrs and went to the bar!! fresha s a daisy!!

I had a similar problem with my Audi A4 Quattro 2.0 TDI. Quoted combined figures of around 53 mpg, so was expecting about 43-45. Was getting 35 mpg on average.

Newer VAG diesels are rubbish at fuel economy. Had the A4 3 months (was the new 2012 177 BHP model) before trading it in for a BMW 335d. Get the same economy in that admittedly, but 3.0 instead of 2.0, two turbos instead of one, and after its map, 340 BHP instead of 177 BHP.

Will never buy a new Audi/VW diesel again.
