Hi complete newbie here.

I currently have Discovery sport 2.0 td4 2017.

My car has been broken since June and finally got looked at by a specialist last week.
The question I’ve got is the specialist told me it needed a 3 day diagnostics. He phoned and said he only had it on for 2 days said there’s 2 modules need replacing and something else that he can’t do and will need to go to landrover due to security reasons tv

My question is - The price for the diagnostics is £600 + Vat per day. Is this a normal price for a diagnostic?

Many Thanks

Well that depends, on what was wrong with it, his hourly rate and so on, basically how long is a piece of string.
Diagnosing vehicle electrical faults can be quite a challenge.

If you want to see how difficult some can be, see Diagnose Dan on youtube, he rattles on a bit, but the faults can be interesting, general garages go to him for stuff they cannot fix, possibly much like your specialist.

Depends what he calls diagnosis. Plugging into a diagnostic and running a test won't take more than 5 minutes.
Then you have to diagnose and hopefully cure the faults raised. Things like SWDL's will take longer. I believe the 2017 Landrovers have Software Over The Air and for 2017 I would think that is readily available to LR specialists. No more than 30 minutes per module if SOTA, dependant on download speed ?
A 2017 model should not have anything that is Main Dealer only.
For that price I would expect diagnosis and repair. Last diagnostic I had, two years ago, was £15/hour. It took 10 minutes and cost me £15 !

If you plan on keeping your Disco Sport for some time, definitely invest in a LR specific diagnostic tool like a GAP IID.
A proper diagnostic tool pays or itself after a couple of uses by troubleshooting/correcting faults on-the-spot and not having to go to a stealership or garage.

I think you should find someone else to use. Waiting from June to Oct is waving a red flag for starters. Of course there are always 2 sides to every story.

What is the issue you have and what are they trying to diagnose?

Diagnosing faults in modern vehicles can be a challenging task, especially with the advancement of technology. The key to successfully diagnosing a fault lies in the diagnostic tool that is being used. For example, in the case of 2017 Landrovers, they are equipped with over the air software which can make diagnosing easier. The JLR DoiP VCI is a popular diagnostic tool for Landrovers that has this software readily available.

Once the diagnostic tool has been used to identify the fault, the next step is to diagnose and hopefully cure the issue. This can involve a range of tasks such as checking wiring, sensors, and other components to pinpoint the root cause of the problem. In some cases, the fault may be a simple fix such as replacing a faulty sensor or resetting a system. However, in more complex cases, it may require more in-depth diagnosis and repair.

Overall, diagnosing faults in vehicles can be a challenging but rewarding task. With the right diagnostic tools and knowledge, it is possible to effectively diagnose and resolve issues, ensuring that the vehicle is running smoothly and safely
