Hi all
My 2001 Td5 auto is going in for a new head gasket next week, now my question is as above, should i get the manifold dewebed at the same time, and if so what is the best way to do it ??, and does anybody have any photos or diagrams of how they have done there's, don't want to take of to much and ruin it.
Also have heard of drilling the stud holes bigger for a bit more movement (up to 8mm) is this a good idea or not ??.
Thank you
Bill.

Wow, not often this happens but I was talking to a LR specialist the other day and yes, he grinds the web right out. I did say, "Not just a cut through with a hacksaw then?" and he gave a definite "no". So, pleased I had this conversation for you, as it were!

If I were to do it, I'd cut as much out as I could in triangles with a hacksaw, then grind it back with an angle grinder.
When my manifold went skew-wiff, After I had got it milled/skimmed flat I did exactly the other thing you suggested, i.e. drilled out numbers 2 and 4 by about another mm and numbers 1 and 5 by another 2mm.
It's been fine ever since.
TBH, I had such a battle to get it over the studs that were left (!) I knew I'd have to do it to get it back on, but it does give the manif a bit of "wiggle" room.

Hi, thanks for reply,
From what you say I think i will take out as much as i can with a 1mm slitting disc and then a grinder disc for the rest, any special reason why you took out the stud holes to different size's ??.
I'm not having any problems with the manifold at the moment but from what i have read on different forums it wont be long, will possible do the studs as well but that depends how easily the old ones come out,

Hi Stan, did you leave no 3 as std ? I took all mine out to 9.5mm but didn't de-web but I have spare manifold I might have a tinker with. :)

When I did mine I drilled cylinders 1 and 5 out to 10mm on the manifold, but left the others. It is almost always 1 and 5 that break due to warping, and I did deweb, firstly with a disc cutter, then a grinder. Also billybones, if you have the manifold off, I strongly recommend replacing all the studs either with Jaguar versions or these

Almost anything is better than the original LR cheese ones...!!!

Many moons ago I dewebbed my manifold, first cut the webs to bits with 9 inch grinder (very messy) then trimmed up what I could with 4.5 inch grinder, then cleaned up the rest with a die grinder which was unbelievably messy, then drilled all holes bar the two end ones out to a laregr size, then used ex manifold nuts off a Renault 19 which had built in floaty type washers.

Lots of advice there, all good I reckon!
I drilled my holes out cos they were sods to get over the studs (those that were left!) and I figured that if it was to happen again I didn't want the hassle.
My manifold distorted in such a way that studs broke or came out on both number 1 and number 5.
Also, and I forgot to mention this, when the stud work was done, I had to drill out and rethread oversize, so obvs I had to do the same to both the manif and the gaskets.
It is said, that once one has distorted/warped and then been reground straight, it is unlikely to do it again, but hey, better safe than sorry!

Hi all
Firstly thanks for this ,
, unfortunately they will take up to 10 days to get to me, asked about quicker but got told no.
rang Wurth who are only 40 miles from me and they don't do a kit as such only individual items and unless i can tell them the thread length of the stud they cannot help, rang Landover who also cannot help with stud length.
Then stroke of luck, bloke from Wurth rang me back and gave me the number of a local Landover mechanic who buys from them, said to give him a ring as he might know what stud size i need, rang him and result he has a full kit on the shelf, YEA WURTH :), and even better he is only 5 miles past Wurth so road trip for me tomorrow.
Thank you for all the help and advice and will try to post some photos when i deweb the manifold.
Bill
