You could probably do it yourself, From memory the baseplate is pretty thick so you could drill / tap it for a grease nipple, think the bottom bearing may have a hole in it already but you could run a small drill through it if it hasn't. Just make sure you don't overfill and push the dust cover off.

Precisely the reason I want to do it. It sounds like it's a home job, in surprised nobody makes them like it.

I have never seen one either, the little kit that is to be had makes it easy'r to change though.

And here's me doing mine:

Another option mentioned on here (which I did) is to grind a couple of grooves into the ball to let the grease round to the top bit. Yes, I did remember to refit the dust cover before tightening the steering link down finally.

Just to throw in there, there are lots of types of drop arms and my local LR garage uses the same for all drop arms..I ordered the correct part and paid about 3 times for it.. He compared it to his standard and said "just the same"... Little did he know I had his part # at home and the reason I wanted the proper part number was as the taper is different and it slotted on an extra inch or two as is required.

This isn't a blue bag flame or defence, just that there are different parts for the drop arm which look "VERY" similar.

Yep. Though does include an HD steering bar and youll never have to buy that stupid ball joint again.

On a personal note I don't mind the drop arm or it's ball joint. In fact I quite like them.
They really are quite simple to do.
Now I replaced mine years ago with that blue bag type.
I thought it was pretty good mind I did have a complaint.
The rubber dust cover was crap and I had to replace it with a decent one - but apart from that -:D
Not wanting to start trouble but why did Land Rover make the Disco and Defender one different?
Is one stronger than the other? if that is the case then it has to be the Defender one that is stonger.
I mean - I own a Defender so it has to be!!! ;):D:)

But you have replaced a ball joint with a ball joint, which will need replacing at some point, providing you can get one that fits.

Disco steering set up is a little bit different.
Stronger? In what way? Ive never ever broke a pitman arm.

True yes but one that is 100x easier to replace.

Took a few hours, an angle grinder, an axe and a scaffold bar to get my drop arm off to replace it. If it ever goes again, its a simple case of dropping the track rod and undoing the track rod end, which is also greaseable, readily and cheaply available.

My track rod was also damaged at the time so made sense to fit this kit.

No clue why there are two types, never looked into it.

It would probably be cheaper to buy a drop arm and drag link off a scrap disco and fit that. It'll obviously have no bracket for the steering damper. All you need is two small pieces of flat bar welded to the drag link. half an hour tops (not including the time needed to remove the dreaded defender drop arm).
