Speakers in a pre-TD5 defender

Lets miss the ‘don’t bother’ comments as I’ll be putting them in regardless haha.

Choices as I see them;

Two front speakers with two tweets (simulating TD5 style)
Or
Two front only (maybe the tweets will be pointless with a 300tdi under the bonnet?)
Or
two front and rear speakers (larger speakers putting out more noise?

My plan was to put them in the dash like TD5 and put spacers in to clear the wiper motor, but I’ve heard these can look ridiculous. Anybody got photos/thoughts? Does the speaker really get in the way for the passenger?

Next option is to mount above the door post. I don’t have a roof lining, so would need to make a box etc to hold it. I wouldn’t expect this to give as good sound if its blaring in one ear?

When do I know if I need an amp? I’m thinking of getting the Mud Sub too. Will a normal stereo be enough to run two speakers and a sub? What spec do I need to look for?

I have two small speakers in the dash (either side of the head unit) and two larger surround speakers mounted just above/behind the seats - bolted to the interior roof gutter. With a Sony 4 x 50w stereo, these are easily loud enough to overcome a 200TDi. The rear speakers are pointed inwards and forward - towards the opposite seat.

I have two fonts, one each side by your ear in the roof lining and then two smaller ones in the rear corners again in the roof lining. My font speakers have build in tweets but cant say I notice. With hardtop and a 200tdi under the bonnet, even with the sound proofing I have, sound quality is not as important as volume. Therefore next to your ear is ideal. These are all run no problems off a standard stereo unit. If you wanted a sub as well I would suggest you need an amp, but again with the other noise/rttle/bang/vibration, I would not bother with a top quality system as you wont appreciate in improved sound quality in a defender.

I have 2 front in the dash I have 300tdi also and there plenty loud enough. Ive just added 2 tweeters on the top and it does sound better overall
