Good morning, I have a Land Rover Defender 90 XS TD and for some years now have been having a problem with it going into limp mode. This only ever happens on a long journey after I've been driving for over an hour. It then suddenly goes into limp mode with no warning and the orange dashboard light comes on. The problem can be solved immediately simply by turning off the engine and then switching on again immediately at which point the limp mode has gone and I can carry on driving. I've had it to various garages and it's been plugged in to various computers. One said it was the actuator (this was changed and hasn't made any difference); one said it was the EGR valve (changed, no difference); one said it was a sensor (changed, no difference). No one seems to be able to tell me why this is happening - does anyone out there have any suggestions as to what might be causing this. Apart from this problem, it's running fine. It's a 13 registration and has only done 56000 miles.

The problem you have is that none of us know what Landrover you have, what year, what engine so we can't really help.
My landrover for example (a 1994, Defender 90 with a 300tdi engine) doesn't have any orange lights on the dashboard.
Nor does it have an OBD port.

We like pictures too (although in this instance it probably won't help, but we like pictures anyway).

Hi there - the vehicle is a LR Defender 90 XS TD 2.2 CC, registered in March 2013, short wheel base. The orange light that comes on when it goes into limp mode is, according to the handbook, an engine malfunction light. This light doesn't stay on all the time and seems to go off after a while, sometimes it goes off of its own accord, sometimes not. Sorry no pictures possible at the moment as it's absolutely chucking it down...any suggestions gratefully received!

I personaly don't know alot about these at all, but there are those who do.

You need to take some essential logical steps. First, get a code reader on it and clear all the historic fault codes (this is to get a clean start to analysing the problem rather than chasing historic data). Then drive until the fault reoccurs, and get the code reader on it again. Make a note of the fault codes and any descriptions, this is essential to starting to analyse the problem. I have all the codes in a manual so can help if you get the codes. I suspect from the symptoms in your first post that you have a boost problem, occurring above a certain rev range. Switching the ignition off and on again allows the management system to reset, and then the problem reoccurs when the boost reaches that certain level again. I won't expand on this at this stage, as it is guess work without knowing the codes.
