Hey guys,

Looking at trying to change the gearbox in my lightweight?
At the moment I have a 2.5 diesel an in and was wondering how much work it should be to put a defender gearbox in?

I think you've got to move the crossmember for it to go in. The tunnel also needs modifying

Defender tunnel and a nibble out of the front edge of the seatbox to enable full travel of the hi/lo lever ....

Ohhh and custom propshafts as you end up with is sitting slightly deferently to a series one .

There are also those that say the sky will fall down and your world to stop turning unless you also fit a stage one axle (CV joints rather than series style )due to the "permanant 4x4 of the LT77

I call bull**** on that one personally after running a lt77 Tdi combo in the Mrs's s2 88" for many many miles including plenty of towing .

Ok it's not a simple drop in BUT it makes for a stonking drive ....ratios nicely matched to the engine ...stronger than a standard series and overdrive .

It's the way my 2A 109 station wagon will be going in the new year ....
 
I'm doing this conversion right now on my light weight. You have to amass quite a few parts which I now have, just finding the time is the current challenge:(

Defender LT77 Seatbox (110 type is best), floor pans, tranny tunnel, bulkhead diaphragm, gearbox crossmember, handbrake lever and cable, gearbox mounting brackets. You will also need a pair of 3.54 diffs, or as i'm doing, use a 1.003 ratio tranasfer box and keep std diffs.

Cut off the existing gearbox x-member from the chassis with a spinner, likewise the handbrake bracket. Then its a question of hanging the new gearbox in position and drilling holes for the gearbox mounts and cross member - this is where I'm at now.
