Hey everyone, I am back again with some questions. Still looking into buying a Defender 90 pick-up. Just wanted to know if any of you know something or anything about the automatic transmisions. I am not sure if I sould go with auto or 5 speed. Are the autos just as strong as the 5 speeds? Also, which is better...a 300tdi or a 200tdi? I see a lot of Defenders that are converted to 300tdi but for what reason? Are they better diesels? Sorry for all the lame questions, I am new to this and I want to make the best choice!:D Thanks for the help!

ive got a 300, its easier to fit cos you dnt have to **** around with exhausts etc.

Personally, id get a manual. If you are going to be using your def for what its made for youll apprechiate the control and extra torque.

Well just to throw a spanner in the manual works......

Many many people who have driven a auto off-road much perfer it to a manual. Yes you have to make a slight change in driving style but the almost infinate low low first gear gives lots of control.

IME, those that don't like autos off road have very often never driven one.

In UK the only Auto Land Rovers made by Land Rover were the 50 Anniversary special, so any Autos you see are almost certainly conversions, so it is difficult to make general statements about them.
Generally I like Autos, but they can lack engine braking, so may need a different drivimng style.
Looking at the current range, it has to be auto every time, it's the earleir ones I'd be a bit more careful about.

i have a driven an auto defender and i can honestly say it was god damm awfull, there is just no get up and go in them, you have to really give it some revs especially when pulling away from junctions.i have driven an auto v8 rangy and offroad especially it was superb all be it very lazy, the auto defender offroad was horrible,me personally unless its a v8 defender auto i would steer clear of an auto diesal, but everyone to there own

Got me a 3.5V8 90 auto absolutly bluuuuuuuuuuudy love it. I use to drive manuals in the military also good but i'd never give up my auto for a manual. But this is only my choice
hope you find what you want, if you don't don't i'm sure you'll defenatley GROW to LOVE it, be it an man or auto
Scrumpy

I've got a manual. I love it.

That said, was speaking to a disco owner the other day who loved his automatic. He said it let him concentrate on the ground instead of on his gears.
