Hello all,

First off: Happy new year!

As i mentioned in the introduction part of the forum, i've an ex-mod, rhd 2.5d n/a 110. It's doing ok, but there are some points i like to fix.

One of the points is that it is leaking oil from the filler cap ontop of the rockerbox. Do you guys have some things i need to check? I already tried making the rubber ring thicker but that didn't help much.

Another question i have is about the propshafts. Yesterday i replaced my handbrake by an X-Brake. I noticed there is a lot of play in the joints which shouldn't be there. Now i can ofcouse replace them by originals, but perhaps you guys have a better alternative?

Last question: how smooth should the high/low gear stick go? Almost feels like mine is stuck.

Will be interested in any replies you get re the oil filler cap. Mine does the same.

I notice you have a belt on your 24v alternator - does that not mean that it's running all the time? If so, I would remove the belt. I have remove the 24v alternator from mine - it gives access to the injection pump and throttle assembly.

It would be worth checking your breather pipes and valve. Mine was spitting oil out of the centre rocker nut. I managed to stop the leak with a little sealant but now the headgasket has blown so I think this was an early indication of the problem.

i've already removed the belt, but the dynamo is still there, might that that off aswell. Not using the 24Volt anyway. I'll have a look at all the hoses coming off that cap. You might be right that one is clogged or the valve is stuck.

BTW, I meant to say the oil seal on my cap is in very good condition and grips onto the rocker cover well - it's never let any oil through. If yours is old, it may need replacing.

My (very limited) understanding is that there should not be much pressure in the rocker cover so if there is, it may indicate another problem. Looking back, the issue with mine was clearly a warning of what was to follow.

If you can blow through both sides of the breather valve it should be ok. Does not taste good though ;) I removed mine and cleaned it in paraffin then dried it thoroughly before returning it.

Hmm i've changed out the hand brake during newyears hoping that the squeeling in the drive train was solved. Although the handbrake mecanism was somewhat stuck it wasn't the cause.

Any ideas on this problem?

I know, they will be replaced :)

but i don't think the squeeling comes from there, or does it?

can do ,a dry one often does, but if your unsure of a cause of an issue you need to cure the ones you know first

yeah, good point. i'll order a front and rear propshafts this week. Might as well do both.

cheaper too. I've the grease nipple version now, atleast on the back i do, not sure about the front.

Are they easy to replace?

reasonably ,its safer to fit them after starting spider in the first cup to push that well into yoke till its nearly out the other side so that second cup can be fitted on spider whilst still in the other cup ,then fit c/clip to first cup side and pressing second will push first back to c/clip there is a buster guide that will give you an idea too

ok, cool. sounds like something i can do within a day. need to work on the street somewhere infront of the house :p

There's a post on the emlra forum about solving the leaky oil filler cap. I think you'll need to be a member to see it, but the general gist is this:

Remove cap/mushroom, clean it really well with petrol. dip seal in hot water until soft. Wind 5 layers of insulating tape around said mushroom, refit seal over tape.

If that fails repeat with new seal. I've also found the cap needs to sit perfectly level on the rocker cover, so adjust the breather if that's forcing it onto the wonk.

Nice !! I got 90 ex mod 1986 no leaks from cap but it leaks like fountain by the engine /gearbox Crank seal. That is my job shortly. But apart from that it is sound !! Leaks through the doors too!! Minor detail lol

Not sure if it applies here reguards the oil filler cap. I had the 2.5td engine in my 1987 90. I gad the same issue. The reason was the piston rings were letting pressure past and pressurising the oil system. I replaced the engine

little update. I replaced the rear poprshaft, checked wheels etc etc, but it was still making squeeling sounds. Yesterday my land rover dealer finally picked it up as i had no idea where to look without having to take the whole car apart on the street :D Got a email from him saying the transferbeargox as ran out of oil (completely dry) and ofcourse died after miles and miles of driving :D

Guess i need to check those oil levels too from time to time :p
