Hi guys ,, HAPPY NEW YEAR.

I hope someone can help me AGAIN please.

Defender 300tdi 1994.
I have had a battery drain for about a year now and it is driving me nuts, had her into garages
and still got the drain.
So I have decided with a bit of internet home work and a multi meter to go at it alone.
Checked the battery and it is holding charge at 12.40 volts.
Done amp check by pulling all the fuses and eventually found that the 60 amp fuse in engine bay is causing 0.36 amp drain, if I am right this = 360 milliamps which is too high.
I cant find any thing on what these fuses do.
The fuse box is in engine bay to the right hand side next to heater matrix and attached to the bulk head,, 1st fuse nearest front of car is 20 amp, 2nd is 60 amp 3rd is 60 amp and 4th is 30 amp,,, it is the 3rd fuse (60 amp) in thats causing the drain.
Has anyone got any ideas what this fuse does and is it common to get a drain from here.

Glow Plug timer.

I don't know if it is a common issue or not though.

300Tdi glow plug relays have a timer circuit built within the relay, sounds like it's fubared ...

on earlier models feed for the car was taken straight from the battery lead at the starter, with the 300 the feed comes from starter still but via that fuse box

THanks James.
Latest= I have checked all glow plugs to see if they are shutting down after heating up with a electrical tester, and they all stop getting
power after about 5 seconds, (I can clearly hear relay clicking) so I think thats normal.
I have pulled the relay timer connections out and I am still getting the drain.
All wiring and connections that I can see looks good and proper.
James could it be the starter causing the drain?

Thanks Dippypud,, I have pulled the connections off the relay timer and still getting drain, does this change your theory?

its possible, its usually something with a winding ie solenoid ,alt relay etc

Someone had done a mod on my wiring loom, the switched feed on the glow plug timer was also wiring into the stop solenoid. Worth checking all the wiring for mods/damage/chafing.. Diodes can go in alternators and can cause a drain.

If you have pulled the glowplug timer and you still have a current draw then I think it must be the ignition 60A fuse rather than the glow 60A fuse. To prove it pull the fuse which has the current leak and try to start it, if it doesn't crank that proves it is the ignition fuse and a different set of potential causes.

HI guys , thanks again for the help and advice.

I am now completely lost, heres the latest.

The 0.36 amp draw is now down to 0.14, my TV box was draining 0.12 amps, so thats sorted that.
So I now have a draw of 0.14 amps to find. I took the 3 wires off the starter motor and obviously the drain went down to zero.
I reconnected the thinner brown wire ( ignition I think) and the heavy battery wire only ,, and drain went down to 0.07 amps. Ok.
I then connected the heavy battery and the other heavy wire that goes to the fuse box with 60 amp fuse in it, and drain was down to 0.07 amps again.

I don't know if this is good or bad.

I then though what the f--k , while I am in here I might aswell try disconnecting the alternator wires.
I disconnected the fine wire and it made no difference, I then disconnected the heavy brown wire as well
and the drain went down to 0.07 amps..

AAAAAARRRGH,,,,, GUN ANYONE?

I JUST RECHECKED IT AND IT IS NOW READING 1.1 AMPS.

Thanks,, if I pull the guilty fuse I get no power anywhere.

Front spot lights, roof lights, rear work lamps, stereo/ dvd player, freeview tv , electric adjustable seats, after market alarm, land meter and LED footwell lights.
I have checked all these and its not them. Its coming from the 60 amp fuse but god knows where before that.

On this point,
I am stranded in Gatehouse of Fleet at the moment after a long drive I stopped the landy and it wouldn't crank again. The fuse being discussed here had blown. And as soon as I put a replacement in that blew. Waiting for an auto electric ian to come tomorrow to have a look. Anyone got any ideas what it might be. Checked what earths I can and no wires appear to be damaged.
