Any buying advice in particular about this year. Been fitted with a 300 tdi 80k from a different vehicle. Chassis seems ok, any particular places to look. Also anyone had experience putting a smaller steering wheel on, does it make much difference. How small can u go?[emoji12]

same as usual.

few differences. doors, wash/wipe, no side lights.. stuff like that.. nothing huge.

just make sure the engine is a good job and the chassis will have been welded or replaced

all of it. get underneath and bang the chassis with a hammer/screwdriver.

the rear xmember goes, so look up the legs a bit away from it to look for weld marks.

bulkhead rots around the footwells.

got any pics of it?

1987, its a Ninety, or a One Ten, not a Defender.

Don't just look at the chassis, take a small hammer to it. rear xmember and rails, outriggers, where the upper rear xmember attaches to the top of chassis rails, especially go over the rear chassis legs going back to the rear xmember. Those are the worst area.

Bulkhead same, in the foot wells, on and around door pillars, under windscreen.

Why on earth would you want to put a small steering wheel on?standard wheel is well designed to control the vehicle on and off road!

Good advise I shall get hammering. I need a smaller wheel as me knees are far too high, the wheel is pushing against me legs. Looking to do tgat before rear bulkhead removal and seat rails. A small steering wheel then, does it adversely affect thibgs? More turning I guess but shes pas

if you can, get some pics of it up here before buying inside/outside/engine and underneath

I would guess someone may have fitted a non standard seat, I am quite comfortable behind the wheel at 6 foot one, although the driving position isn't great for long journeys.

The standard wheel works well when you are picking your way through rocky sections, and hanging out the window to see where the front wheel is.

No experience of a small wheel, I think the later Td5s and so on may have them, but never had one.

And like trax says^^^^^^^^^^^^, post some pics of it, and you will get a few frank opinions about it :)

I ran a 300mm Raid wheel on my 1986 90 for years, suited me perfectly, am now on a 350mm Momo. Just fancied a slightly different style and it didn't take long to get used to the (slightly) larger diameter.
Both are significantly smaller than the original offering which was not required after I had retrofitted PAS.

Heres the link with loads of pics but no chassis pics

Cheers

Been cleaned and painted up for the forecourt, some cheap mods on it!

To be fair, good looking wheels and tyres, and the engine bay looks pretty well cared for! :)

Shame there are no pics of the underside, or any of the problem areas of the bulkhead. What very little of the mechanics and chassis can be seen looks a little dry and unprotected. Check the chassis and bulkhead carefully, would be my top tip on that one.

loads of parts swapped. not orig roof, doors, wings, grill, inside.

orig steering wheel and maybe dash.

crap conversion on the interior.. whats with the auto stick.. can see rust on the bulkhead.

i'd walk away if it was me, not worth the money... if it's really a 1987
