When it comes to offroading I have always been a Pajero man and I have always resisted land rovers but I am seriously considering giving one a go. A defender 90 in particular.

I want something with a Diesel engine, good sized simple load space in the back similar to a van, the option of carrying a third person in the back with a fold away seat and a simple interior that won't be a nightmare if water and mud gets in.

A defender ticks all of those boxes.

I would have to live without 2wd which is the main reason I haven't gone land rover before which I know many wont understand but that is a big thing for me!

Now my Pajero never once broke anything drivetrain related even being an animal with the driving and people have told me if I get a land rover with big aggressive tires I will break diffs and gearboxes all the time, I would like to know people's views on this statement as I can take things going wrong but I don't want to be changing diffs all the time.

It would be a green laning machine with some pay and play occasionally aswell.

The other thing that attracts me to landys is the availability of modifications off the shelf! Such a great choice for the landy owner compared to what I'm used to.

I'm looking at 300tdi's or possibly stretch to a td5 any info on these would be great as I like tackling abit of wading sometimes and I guess the 300tdi with the lack of electrics is more suited to that?

Any advice will be greatly appreciated I am new to land rovers and don't have much knowledge of them.

Thankyou

If you go laning and blow a diff or wreck a gearbox i would venture the suggestion that you are behaving like a tit.

If you want loadspace, a 110 is your friend.

It was pay and play I was referring to when it comes to the misbehaving I don't miss treat lanes.

90 is plenty load space more than I'm used to I only need to carry recovery stuff etc

Agree'd I've given my V8 serious stick to get up climbs and o haven't damaged anything. Diffs break if you don't look after them or if you hit something that could happen in anything. Why 2wd?

Up until last weekend, I had a L200 4WD double cab, and a 90 Defender. Each had their good points and bad, but I have kept the Defender. The way mine drives is so much more planted, it tows the car trailer so much better. Not sure why you want selectable 4wd but it does not make for heavy steering like the mitsi does. The general way the defender is put together is also more rugged. Avoid rust and you should be fine.

stick with the pajero mate these green ovals are a nightmare :D

i had mk1 pajero for years loved it till it died on me then i bought a range rover :crazy::behindsofa:

2wd is so much better to drive on road and I love the general experience of rwd vehicles

Land rovers won't play on road well enough to make the difference! Even my old bmw had to be pushed a little to show off rwd supremacy
