I am not good with the really oily stuff underneath, I am the wrong shape,,
so I have asked a couple of local garages about changing the fluid in the IRD,
Rear Diff and maybe the gearbox as well,
I have a couple of issues and I am hoping that a fluid change will do the trick..
if nothing else I don't suppose it will hurt..

The first garage didn't know what an IRD on a Freelander was, so I will give them a miss,

The second garage seems really knowledgeable about the Freelander,
the tightness of the filler on the IRD,
the temperature and most importantly the correct gearbox part to undo,
and they sound like an outfit that cares..
brother had a couple of MOT's done there but no actual work,,

I thought I would just see what the local dealer would charge,,
before committing to anything..

IRD fluid change on its own = £106
Full A Service = £640
Full B Service = £740

So the second garage will be getting the job of the IRD fluid change,
and check and top up the rear diff if needed at £50,
if this is a satisfactory job then they will get plenty of future work from me,,

Fingers crossed..

I will be doing most of these things myself or the second garage will get the work if all goes well,
just nice to have the comparison prices..

Just make sure the garage uses the correct oil for the IRD, Diff, and Gear Box, if your having them all done at the same time.

I had a phone call from my local LR dealer yesterday. I bought my car new from them almost seven years ago now. They asked if I was ready to change it for a new model and told me they were offering a special deal on a new model. The deal was servicing for the next five years for a total price of £199. Now thats a great price to be fare, but like the way they have priced it up to just before the Major six year service which is a very expencive one.

Think if I was you I would be on a steep learning curve and at least that way, you know that its been done

IRD fluid change = £106

it takes 1,1ltr of 75W90 and the HARD part is to unscrew the filler plug, besides that it's a fast and easy job to DIY

extremely expensive, you need:

1.1 L IRD oil (£15 for 1 L)
2 L Gearbox oil (£13 for 1 L)
1 L diff oil (£8 for 1 L)

May be do it your self, with the money saved you can almost buy your own ramp

When I bought the oil from LR main dealer, They said 1L would be enough and they were right, it started coming out of the fill hole right at the end of the 1L fill.

Did all my transmission fluids in an afternoon,the hard parts was siphoning the old oil out of the rear diff. LR says this oil does not need to be changed but who the hell believes that. They very kindly didn't provide a drain plug for this reason. Basstids.

Wow! That's expensive servicing. I stay well away from the dealers now. Probably best to use an independent specialist, that's if you don't want to get your hands dirty.

Get your self some tools and learn how to DIY. you will enjoy saving all that dosh, and know the work has been done correctly .

Got to agree with that. I did all mine a couple of weeks ago and found it very easy to do. Saying that I have got a pit in the garage, but if you put the car up on blocks you should have pleanty of room to get under it and do it yourself.

If you do go down the DIY route, make sure you can undo the fill/level plugs before you drain any fluid off.

If you can get under the car it's very simple to do. Just make sure you can undo the fill/level plug first before you drain.

mine took a bit over 1L, but I drained it after a +/-10km drive (to warm it up) and left it dripping overnight.

best way to do it is leave it over night then you will know all is out and on the ird make sure you do not use the multi contact sockets, always use the ones that touch the nut head all the way around then it will not slip , my last car someone had done that i had to weld a bar onto the end to get it off ,as i could not get near it with anything.

Yes you do need a good 6-sided socket , I also found a swivel head ratchet with the handle angled to front of car so it clears the cross member , I light hit with a mallet and mine came undone , Think mine took almost 1 litre before it run out !

if you want to spend your money on changing oil, carry on , but its not nessasary, just check the oil levels at regular intervals, its a freelander not an f1 racer ,

dose anyone ever bother to change the brake fluid ? or power steering fluids ?

I do...but thats a disco which clearly IS a F1 car.

If f means fecked.

I change the brake and ps fluid every 2 years, average mileage.
