I fitted one of these 'de-cat' pipes to my 300 toy recently but never got out to take it on a test run as I had to get cleaned up to take the missus out!

it's been sitting for a couple of weeks out the front and today was the day I finaly got to drive it...

...and boy, what a difference!

Much more responsive, nice new audible turbo whistle, a free-er reving diesel. Positivley better!

Was it worth the £25 odd quid and an hour or so on yer back..?

Yes, without doubt... Nice cheap and effective mod. Happy Days!
 
I'm curios how do you get on at MOT time without the cat on will it still pass the emission test as i say only curios as i was thinking of fitting one.
 
yeh not sure but think its year 2000 for a petrol car and 2004 for a diesel car but as reguards diesels the jap car market had to have catts from early on 1990s i think and as the british market cars are more or less the same as jap cars ( land rover ) so it stayed with the british cars but can be removed if the car is made before 2004 but i could be wrong i know there are peeps on here that have 03 plate d 2s with de-catts fitted i plan to fit a de cat on mine soon.

The cat/mot question is very simple. The UK mot for diesels is a smoke test only. No need for cats.
 
Do you have a part number? I'm a bit confused because Paddocks list the part as ESR2740 for the "Disco 300TDi without cat" but eBay listings described for a Disco 300TDi are part number ESR2297. Looking on Paddocks shows this as for a Defender. I guess you use ESR2297 and fit the Defender part to a Discovery, and ESR2740 is something slightly different? Does one have a flexi and the other, no flexi in it?

The Defender pipe fits the Disco and does not have the flexi bit. It is also about £50 cheaper than the Disco pipe. Whish I'dve have known that before I shelled out £70 for the Disco pipe :doh:

The MOT guy spent no time putting sensers down my exhaust so either he did half a job or it's a visual test..

Yep. non flexi for me too, a Hi-lift on the front bumper to lift the chassis away from the axle did the trick. I didnt need to remove the cross member

You have to jack the body up to take the weight off the suspension then it just goes in without removing the cross member as the gap opens up and you can spin it round under the engine up into place. I spent an hour on my back trying to figure that one out? Then I thought to do a search on here and there was my answer :doh:

Then it took ten mins with a bottle jack and block of wood :D

I know a guy that has a garage and keeps all the old cats and gets £50 each for them from the scrap man, no idea if they're diesel or petrol but they must be pretty much the same.

I just chucked mine in a skip, I was told it was worth £25 but by the time i travelled to a scrap merchants it was not worth the aggro for me. If I was told it was £50 it would have been different!!

One thing I will say if you de-cat is watch that flexy section, mine was breaking up where the wire bit is and it was like holding a bleeding hedgehog, i got several nice wounds from it on my left hand, so wear a decent pair of gloves as latex ones like i was wearing dont offer any protection.
 
I've been thinking of trying this mod as I feel my engine is down on power. Its a high miler at 225K but there is not too much smoke to worry about, I have checked the turbo rotor and the movement seems acceptable (Tiny side to side movement but no in and out movement) and done the EGR removal.

Just been thinking if an old blocked cat would reduce power or would the bits just fall apart and blow through leaving a decat anyway?

It's not a visual test, he should have inserted a probe ("Oooooh Nurse") to measure the ppm of soot in the exhaust.

I seem to recall that the newer petrol ones contain platinum - good payday if you visit the scrappies with that! I don't think these primitive diesel ones contain any, they're more of a basic particulate filter.

Decat is the way to go, i fitted a solid front pipe £16 and the difference was bloody amazing:) It blew some sh1te out for about 15minutes and then it cleared, really drives well now.

I'm gonna cut the old one open for a look-see.
