I stupidly let a friend drive my TD5, who managed to drive 3 miles at reasnoble speed with the handbrake on. Rather than notice then handy warning light on the dash, it was the burning smell and smoke in the cabin that alerted him to the problem.

It seems to drive fine now, however I am unsure how much damage could be caused as believe the handbrake is attached to the rear drive shaft?

Can anyone let me know if I need to worry about this - or has it just knocked some life off the handbrake shoe?

cheers for any thoughts offered

cheers - hoped that was the case. The hand book suggested it could damage the transition so was worried that it may have been a costly mistke

its true it can.....but it would be fairly obvious....luckily most Landys have pretty crap hand brakes:)

no need to let yer mate off the hook just yet though give him a very un-happy new year ;):D

could have damaged the prop uj as if it got that hot it smoked and smelled of burning it will have heated that too, also when drums get hot they distort! oh and it will have over heated the oil seal in there so expect it to start leaking in the next couple of weeks...

cheers for your thoughts. My mind is now semi put to rest (until the next service) - and I wont be letting my mate off, although he is now flying home to the states. Apparently handbrakes are a novelty over there.

I have let a couple of mates drive mine for a tiny bit each at different times. One nearly drove into some roadworks cause he couldn't turn the wheel hard and fast enough and then proceeded to go up a high curb on the other side as he couldn't pull it round in time. I think he was a little shocked at how different it was to drive to his little citroen ax!! I let another drive offroad and I almost shat myself as we came as close as i have ever been to rolling over!! Hope there is no serious damage caused to your landy =/
