can anyone confirm this ?

if its perniment 4WD then why move the little stick to the left ? and also when you do move the stick to the left the 4WD light comes on , on the dash. so it cant be pernimant 4WD.

can anyone shed some light ?
 
I believe the 'little stick' as you refer to it as is the Lo/High ratio box to the right and moving it to the left in either position is the diff lock, although they call it the diff lock i think it actualy only acts on the tranfer box and not the front and rear diffs.
 
The transfer box is similar to the diffs where it shares the power around, between the front and the back. Then the diffs share betweent the wheels for when you are turning corners etc when one wheel has to travel further than the other on the same axel. By putting it into lock it then ensures that both the front and rear are recieving equal power.

so if i take my disco on the field tommorw , i try and do i dohnut will the front wheel just spin me off in a streight line ? or will the back wheels spin and take me round in a circle. ? ?
 
When I played the same game in mine I went round in a very 4 wheel drive circle. driving to all wheels with loads of wheel spin. both front and back. I know this because I had the door open at the time to see what was happening.!!
 
ALL Discoveries are permanent 4WD. The little gearstick, if you move forwards & back, selects low or high ratio and if you move it to the left it locks the transfer box diff - this is why the sign illuminates on the dashboard. It is there to remind you to take the vehicle out of difflock as soon as the conditions allow. You shouldn't be on a firm surface, ie road, with difflock on as you will get transmission wind-up (which is bad). Difflock is an extreme off-road tool and only 'proper' 4WD trucks have it. For typical off-road conditions you won't even need to use it. All Defenders are permanent 4WD too, it's only the old Series Land Rovers that were selectable. They were either rear wheel drive or 4WD, depending on the levers engaged in the cab. Get yourself an owner's manual from a dealer or off Ebay.
 
Yes all discoverys are permanent 4 wheel drive. As are freelanders and range rovers i think.


Trust me, stick a caravan on the back and you will notice the difference between permanent and non permanent 4 wheel drive.

Especially going round bends.
 
The Discovery Is A Permanant Four Wheel Drive, To Convert It To Two Wheel Drive So That You Can Do Donuts You Need To Remove The Front Prop Shaft
