Hi folks, I joined the forum a few days ago and I've already had some great help from you guys. I'm a total newbie to Land Rovers, I had the use of one for a single evening, now I'm smitten. I rushed out and bought one thats been sitting round for about four years!!!

She needs a fair bit of work, plenty of welding to be done, all four outriggers and rear crossmember on the chassis. The body looks fairly good, the drivers footwell is shot and upper bulkhead needs an end on it.

It's a 2.5TD on a 1990 with only 80,000 miles on the clock, shame it's not a 200TDI with that mileage :) The water pump is shot, so I'm now in the process of changing it and giving her a full service. All the parts are one the way.

Other problems, demisters only work on faster speeds, indicators don't work, but hazards do and the wipers don't work at all. Other than that, she's cherry :doh::doh:

I'll probably find plenty more as I work through her.

Rear crossmember and extensions have been ordered from black sheep and tomorrow I'll order all four outriggers from MIB.

Here's a few pics to get the ball rolling.....

Sounds like wiring to steering column for those things. I would seriously consider doing the 200tdi conversion while you are in early stage. Get an mot fail disco cheap and swop engine over. Break disco. Put transfer box on too and maybe even the disc back axle.

Apparently you can use a td manifold now to do it but there are threads on here on how to etc. the power difference is quite significant.

I am tempted, but I want to get her up and running first, save some pennies and do a whole list of mods at the same time, watch this space :)

shame you don't do the outriggers too, I'd have the lot from you. HD front bumper next month tho or SWMBO will cut off my danglies lol

I"ve had a poke and prod this afternoon.......

passenger footwell is in great condition, drivers could really do with replacing and fuel filler neck had corroded through, i'm hoping a series one will fit :)

without wanting to doom monger.... if the outriggers and crossmember are that far gone I doubt you'll have much good metal to weld onto.

I'd be giving the whole chassis a good going over to make sure its worth spending out on all the replacement parts.

i've been over the chassis and it all appears to be good and solid. I was expecting the chassis to be rotten where the osf outrigger is welded on, but even that looks good.

I change x members on 10yr old landies on a regular basis so x member rot is no big deal. The thing to check is for blistering on the inside of the chassis rails between the x member and level with the spring seats, this is where its double skinned and you get water between the two and corrosion pushing the two skins apart

Out on the drive playing with the Landy again today. oil, fuel and air filter changed. New timing belt and tensioner fitted. just waiting for my next delivery from paddocks so I can nail her back together again with a shiny new water pump. I better adjust the valves while I'm under the bonnet. Once I know she runs ok, I'll remove the body and get the new outriggers and rear crossmember fitted.

got a nice freebie today, a pair of electrically operating, leather porsche seats, should be nice when i get her up and running

wow, been longer than i thought since i last posted. I've been busy buying bits and bobs.

i've cut the rear crossmember off and am now in the process of welding on a new one supplied by Black Sheep Offroad, i've completed most of one side and i hope to finish it off in the evenings after work.

Also had a call from the lovely people at MIB today, my set of their outriggers should be with me before the weekend so I should be a very busy boy over the next few days :) I'm really chuffed because they were cheaper than buying a cheap and nasty set.I'll post some pics as soon as they are on.

On the downside, I ran my engine up to move the landy up the drive and after a few hiccups she started belching out blue smoke :( rather than spend any more money on the engine i've bit the bullet and bout a 135,000 miles L reg 200tdi disco. only down side is the auto box. After a discussion at work, the fella I work with has a defender with a 300tdi conversion and we're in negotitations on slipping the 200tdi and auto into his and i'd take his 300tdi and box. god knows when we'll find the time to do all this lol.

other things i've bought are a snorkel kit for a 200tdi (the 300 already has one so either way we'll both get a snorkel), a set of top cappings for the buck, already painted red, but thats not really a problem. I picked up and tasty used alpine stereo from flea bay, a little soon i know, but it keeps me happy.

thanks for reading and i'll post pics soon
