I have my MOT on Saturday afternoon and looking through last years sheet there is an advisory about play in the nearside front wheel. The MOT station man was a Disco driver and told me i needed to get some shims and fit them. i bought three sizes of shims but never got around to fitting them. Could anyone point me towards a guide on how to do this. My Haynes does not cover it. The shims i bought are metal oval shaped with holes either end - look a bit like manifold gaskets i used to use on an old saab.

Thanks

sound like shims for the swivel housing maybe. Grunt may be able to help, hes been fiddling with his shims alot recently :D take a look at the section on rebuilding the swivel bearings in your haynes see if your shims match those in the pics for the swivel assembly.

Aye if its yer swivels they need a pre load. You add or remove the shims till a spring balance shows the right preload. If it's yer wheel bearings you alter the adjusting nut an locknut till yer get 2-4 thou end float, I nearly had a argument with the tester about this cos he dint reckon there should be any play in em, the dickwad! Anyhow It's all in Haynes or the download manual on here.

That's all great info. I'll set to it in the morning. Thanks for your help.

How would i convince a non Landy tester that there should be a degree of 'play'?

yes they can you need to remove the wheel and on top of the swivel there is a mounting point for the brake pipe under that there 2 17mm bolts remove them and pull the pin out may loose a bit of oil and there you will find the shims to do a propper job you need to remove the track rod ends and mesure how mutch resistance there is to turn it
