flat top

Hi all, here we go again.
it's a long one, so you might want to crack a beer !

03 D2 started loosing power the other week, no smoke.
thought ok, service is a couple of months over due.
so I bought all the filters, oil, fuel line treatment and while i'm at it i'll throw the EGR away, so I bought the kit.
no sooner I bought all the kit, I got the dreaded leaking fuel pipe.
fixed the fuel pipe, changed the filter while I was there and the battery went !
£110 later I'm ready to take her round the block then service her.
as i'm driving round the block, it starts loosing power big time, black smoke everywhere then the turbo starts screaming like a scolded cat.
I stopped but couldn't leave it where I stopped so limped back home at 20 then 10 then 5mph (less than a mile) by the time I got home, there wasn't enough power to bump over the drop curb on my driveway.
popped the air box top of, this gave me enough to park it.

been out there today, thought check the simple ones first, you never know your luck.
EGR nothing significant but binned it anyway, air filter new anyway.
intercooler pipes no delamination, both inlet and outlet have a light oiling.
started it briefly screamed but smoke was better (due to extra air I guess)
I'm normally a petrol head, this is my first diesel and my first turbo so bare with me please.
before I ran it, it was hard to turn the rotor, but like I said, i'm new to turbo's so didn't know what to expect.
removed the turbo, the rotor now runs free, there is oil in the air exit, waste gate seems to move ok and at the air end, I can move the shaft about 2mm total side to side.
I notice while changing the egr that the camshaft oil seal is now leaked, it hadn't before I went round the block.
thoughts please, is there anything else I should be looking at or for, is my turbo dead ? or is it worse !

if rotor was at any time difficult to turn turbos knackered but you can help prove it by running engine with both hoses off ,so you can see rotor spinning and any oil lost through outlet

I ran it without the two hoses and it looked like the rotor wasn't turning, then all of a sudden it did, it looked like there was smoke coming out where the bottom hose was.
from what I saw, I presumed it was dead but i'm not familiar with them.

ok. next question

second hand, wouldn't touch with a barge pole.

recon, don't like the sound of that, are they any good ?

new, found one four £499.

hybrid, expensive, how good are the without a remap (may remap at a later date)
