Hello all,

Long time no see (the forum) but I'm hopeful someone can help.....?

My 04 D2 has been making an odd noise when mounting or dropping of curbs for some time now, however Iv not noticed it when green laneing but that's possibly cos I'm concentrating elsewhere.

It sounds like the ABS or TC but the TC light dusunt flash. It only lasts a second and hasn't happened for ages until today.

It could be the waterfall noise when there is air in the heater matrix but it's louder than that and Canot be provoked by hard acceleration, where that noise normally can.

Anyone like to chime in with an opinion I'd love to hear it.

All the best and thanks in advance, Leon

Leon,

It sounds like it maybe the ABS is kicking in. Presumably it is just from one wheel only? If not sure which drop each front (presumably) wheel individually off a kerb to find which one it happens with. This then will be the wheel where either the hub has had it or there is a problem with the sensor. Alternatively get it plugged in to either a Nanocom or Hawkeye, and this hopefully will have some fault codes to tell you which hub it is. It may also help to grip each wheel at 2 and 8 o'clock and shake hard, one will probably have more play than the others, more than likely that's your culprit...

Thanks.

TC light works. Worth asking though

I'll try and find out if it's inside only with some exploratory curb dropping (Seems silly considering the vehicle) and wheel wobbling.

To preempt discovering a specific side, How dose the hub fail? The abs sensor I can understand, check wiring but apart from that....

The hubs fail as the bearing fails. Constant dosing in water doesn't help either!!! The ABS sensor can play up if the airgap inside the hub for the sensor is too big, or there is crap in there stopping it reading properly, or you have fitted a cheap hub with the wrong number of teeth on the reluctor ring. Get it plugged into a Nanocom or Hawkeye and see what it shows as fault codes. Find someone nearby you who has either and will plug it in for you. See the Nanocom locator map here on www.d2bc.co.uk

Is there a comparison thread about Nanocom and Hawkeye?

using the search just pulls up every thread where there help is recommended (every td5 thread in the archive)

Not sure I understand what you are asking. If you use the locator map, you will see there is a guy in Bootle, another in Warrington and another in Runcorn.

Ah. I'll try again. Sorry to not be clear....

If I were to look at buying ether a hawk eye or nanocom is there a good thread that ways up the prose and cons of each. I suspect thay are not identical in there features.

I have looked at getting one before but up until recently the td5 was never going to stay in the fold indefinitely. I'm more of a carbs and dizzy chap and the d2 came In to the collection just to fill the family Buss spot left by a Passat that was a d1 that was a Volvo estate etc. We recently had a flirt with a d3 and my wife was very happy to have here d2 back, hence getting on with lots of niggly little jobs. Looks like a td5 may be here to stay.

It's ok.

Iv worked out getting better results from 'search' and have a selection of discussions.

IMO Nanocom is the better of the two but it is expensive despite there being a group buy going on at the moment with the manufacturers. The main difference is that with a Nanocom Evolution you can insert an SD card and record live data to the card whilst driving, this you cannot do with a Hawkeye as it has no recording facility. This is very useful as you can post the live data file and a number of clever people will tell you what is wrong with it from looking at the live data. VERY USEFUL.....
