Acquired an engine mainly for its cylinder head, stripped it off and dropped it off to be sorted. Only thing worrying me is its definitely an na but the head has Hrc1474 stamped in it and my current one has Hrc2308. The one I've purchased is a civvy engine and mine is military. Can anyone confirm they are the same and interchangeable? They look the same...

Mainly sorting it as my current head is not quite right, crank case pressure is still too high. I don't want a dead Landrover sitting in the drive so I'm going to swap them over in one go.

any pics, especially of hot spot locating roll pins, check glow plug hole size plus whether metric or imperial threads in bolt holes

I have a couple of pics I'll put up tomorrow. Everything has come off with metric sockets and appears identical. All the same holes as each other. Couple of external parts slightly different such as smaller thickness crank pulley and aux belt, fixed fan.

Hot spots and glows look the same, locating pin in identical position.

I think mine is 11J and civvy one is 12J. Can't find anything on the internet about the different no's and my parts manual quotes etc4649 and stc803. Used this manual for building up hrc2308 with no difficulties.

Piston tops, all 4 have rings where the valves have struck them at some point. Otherwise all looks good.

Will dig out a pic of the other head shortly.

try a metric nut on one of the tappet pillar bolts. (the 5 that bolt the tappet rail to the head) the threads are quite different.

Just to close this one out I have fitted the new (to me) head and everything runs fine. Started up better first time than my previous head so i must have put it together well. Frustratingly it still has that drip of oil from the filler cap but i think that's just life.

You probably have better compression with a new head gasket, and fresh oil always helps. I had a similar issue with parts a couple of years ago, and discovered I had an older 2.25 head. A new seal on the filler/vent may be worth a go.
