Hi Guys
Does anyone know if you can reuse the cylinder head bolts when doing a head gasket on a 1998 P38 2.5 DSE ?????????????

Thanks in advance for any help

hi,use new bolts, when the old ones are being used again they will have become stretched even if they are not the stretchy ones, you will not get the correct torque on them, for safety use new ones then no probs like leaking head gasket etc.:)

plus if you don't buy new ones and end up with an issue like I am avin now you'll be stuffed.. my only consolation in 3 days effort and still no movement is that once I get the damn thing out I can take my vengeance on it as much as I like..

imagine me, i will be on my 4th set this week!!! i'm considering putting bleedin wingnuts on for easy access!

There is some jobs where only new bolts will do.for me this one of them.
YES you can reem up the old bolts and YES it may work but as said its best to use new for a good longterm result.

I don't remember all of my brief studies in metallurgy but I do remember there being two phases of deformation in metal: Plastic and Elastic. If I recall correctly the elastic you get back when you release the strain and the plastic you don't.
If you try to reuse a bolt that has been designed to do its job availing of both forms of deformation (i.e a stretch bolt) I certainly would not reuse it for the same job. Its probably fine for hanging a gate but I wouldn't bolt down a head with it, absolutely not in a engine known for head gasket problems.
