Hi guys,

New to the site, need some help with an annoying problem on my 1982 series 3 109 station wagon 2 1/4 petrol. Bought her in September and she was fine for a month, but every so often she'd cough and splutter whilst driving on a long journey, being new to land rovers i thought it was one of the quirks they had. However she'd suddenly got worse, shes ok on warm up, but whilst driving when she now coughs, splutters, revs die down then stalls. I've tried reving her as she dies and sometimes this just speeds up her stalling, sometimes she just coughs and then comes back to life.

Restarting her after she stalls can take some time, she'll cough and splutter again, but start her with your foot on the floor and she clears quick the you have to pull of at high revs, she'll be fine again then suddenly she'll stall again,

Taken the air filter off, cleaner it out and this seemed to sort it out, ran great for about two weeks but died last night with my kids inside,

please any help would be great

I suspect the problem is caused by dirt in the carb, but it would probably be worth checking electrics first: Spark plugs, clean or replace points, now condensor, check condition of distributor cap. Check that there is a good fuel supply to the carb by removing the fuel inlet pipe and pumping the priming lever. Clean out the sediment bowl while you're at it. It it still is not running properly, get a gasket set for the carb and pull it to bits, clean it up and reassemble. Install an aftermarket inline fuel filter to help prevent dirt getting into the carb in the future.

I've had this problem with my 2.5 110 for the last few years, was either points and or condensor. Got so sick of it I replaced points with one of them electronic jobbies, been sweet as ever since (touch wood)

Hey guys, thank you so much for your replys. Took the air filter out, drained the oil out of both inner and out sections, then topped back up to the marked line on the outer part ands she's fine again, but gonna check the cap in the morning and then the fuel supply to the carb. Will keep posted.

Thank you so much
