Collective.

I recently became the proud owner of a 1996 4.6 p38.

It came with lpg kit spring conversion and a few years of sitting idle due to the usual problem with the fuel pump.

We (my son and I) have so far removed the lpg kit. Replaced the pump and run the engine, the range rover now moves under its own power.

However.. My recent troubles have now manifested.

The hevac is blinking on and off. And the fuel gauge is twitching. At the same frequency. If I indicate I can change the frequency. Nothing else is shown on the dash. Rev counter lcd and speedo all appear dead. The fuel gauge twitches but does not show the level.

Hopefully someone can help.

I have so far checked the earth in the footwell and checked becm is dry and good connections. There are no fuses appearing as blown.

Engine still runs though v8 sounds epic.

Sorry for the huge post but trying to give people the full picture.

All work has so far been conducted with battery disconnected. Don't like unintended shorts!

If you can please search your collective epic knowledge I would greatly appreciate the help

Corroded connectors? I've got similar problems but this one has been stood for the best part of 8 years hot to work through them. AND GET RID OF THE SPRINGS AND BACK ON AIR.
 
I will be getting rid of the springs, so if anyone wants to swap!?!

Maybe a stupid response but would the alternator output make the dash act crazy?

It made my othe one come up with alternator fault message on the dash and no tacho reading.
 
Don't run an engine with the battery disconnected. Won't do your alternator any good.
Full charge the battery with a battery charger or substitute a good fully charged battery & see what happens.

Never mind the alternator, it won't do any of the electronics any good

What part was the possibly aimed at? Wanting the spring conversion or alternator being an issue?

Sorry, alternator. With a duff battery, a bad earth or a duff alternator, a pulsating voltage is possible which drives ECU's etc crazy.
 
I will check fuse 1 and alternator output tomorrow, I'm hoping that something shows itself that I can fix.
 
Did it start with its own battery ,OR did you use a high amp power start thing .......RR....:eek:
 
Own battery.

Once pump was changed I tried to start with no joy,

Cleaned injectors and it fired right up. Then... As if by magic the dash stopped being normal.

Whenever I do work on the beast involving wires or anything electrical I disconnect the battery, I've had too many shorts in the past not to take the simple precaution.
 
Aaand. Despite me saying I'll start basic. I cleaned and tightened battery terminals. Checked output of alternator. All appeared good. Then checked fuse 1.....
Anyway. The dash now works, so on to the next issue. Fuel line broken! ‍♂️
