Here's my review of the Cooper Discoverer STT Mud Terrain Tyres:
Size: 31/10.5/r15
Vehicle: Land Rover 200tdi 90
On the road: Of course, most of us don't buy mud terrain tyres to use on the street because they're noisy and provide poor grip especially in wet conditions. However, the STT's are quiet and perform brilliantly on the tarmac, even the surpassing the handling of my original all terrain tyres which themselves could become a little unpredictable around the corners when it got a little damp outside. For on road conditions I run them at 34 psi all round and this seems to be working nicely.
Off road: Most importantly, the off road capabilities of this tyre. After a recent trip to a very wet and muddy pay and play site, I was able to put the new STTs through their paces. Aired them down to a sensible 20psi and off I went. I began by tackling some loose rocky surfaces and some steep inclines to see how well they coped in this type of terrain. At 20psi. these tyres seemed to cling to loose gravel and rock like glue, clawing away at the surface, hauling me up and over the obstacle with ease. Later on in the say I moved on to some muddier areas of the site along with some wet and slippery descents. In the mud I kept the revs high and the Coopers chewed through the clay-like mud with vigor. Not everyone likes to boot it in the mud, but to get the most out of those tyre voids to get the self cleaning action going on, it's a must. I managed to get through the whole day without getting stuck once - and making every obstacle I attempted (bar one where I got cross axled, more on that in a moment).
Gripes:
These tyres do seem to come up quite large, well over an inch bigger than my original AT's. This caused a little issue when attempting a climb with holes to cause a cross axle. This made my left tyre catch the well of the rear tub, meaning I had to back away from the climb.
Cost: Mid range price for a brand new tyre, picked them up for £99 each.
Conclusion: A fantastic all road M/T tyre that behaves itself on the road in the wet and dry. I would highly recommend this tyre!
