I ask because the mechanic said there are 3 thermostats - one for the engine, one for the interior heater and the third from the interior heater
 
Maybe there are I don't understand why you would have separate for the heating elements but maybe that's progress.

Sounds like you need to change mechanics.. Wonder if he is thinking of the heating rheostat.... I mean they sound the same right..... Could it be the CRYOSTAT ? nahh change the mechanic.
 
Kv6 is a pain of an engine, probably didn't want to work on it..
I've come across that on several occasions.
There is only one correct way to change the thermostat on a KV6, which takes about 3 hours. The keyhole way doesn't always work, as often the link pipes don't seal correctly, meaning the inlet manifold needs removing anyway, so I just do them that way. Sometimes what seems to be the faster way ends up being the slower way.
