Hi I have a K reg discovery 200 tdi, and today it has sprung a coolant leak somewhere towards the back right hand side of the engine, not had a proper look yet but is there many coolant hoses to check?

any help much appreciated, i havent had it long

No point guessing that one mate, just get a lamp and a mirror if required and look for where its running out, could be anything from a hose to a cylinder head gasket. Take a rag and dry it off as best as possible and watch where its coming from, could be tracking all the way from the front of the engine for example.
 
yeah, i know its a bit vague, i noticed a bit of steam coming from the engine, and looked to me water had been sprayed onto the turbo on the right hand side of the engine, causing the steam, but then when i started the engine, a saw water literally pouring out somwhere near the back of the engine underneath.

I have been doing some reading on here, and the heater matrix is located around there isnt it? is that easy to get to and check?

i think there is a core plug right at the back of the engine block.
you really need to trace where exactly the water is coming from

Gona be easy to trace if its hosing out, and gratch is right its not the heater matrix, could be a hose to it tho at the top or back of the engine, these hoses sit close to the engine and can chaff through if they aint secure and wrapped with a sleeve of old inner tube or summat.

Even a cable tie will cut through a hose eventually because of the vibration, spent ages on trucks sleeving all em, and air pipes where they are clamped, fuel pipes etc etc.

Remember not to leave it with just water in it, its gona freeze up then yur in trouble, you will have a core plug/plugs to do.
 
yeah i'll have to have a look 2mrw and see where its coming from, im hoping for an obivous and easy fix ...knowing my luck i wont :-(
 
found it, the pipe from the head leading into the bulkhead had a split in it, ordered a new one from land rover, and patched up the old one with some pipe repair tape. thanks for your help and replies

i think LRO had a feature recently (last coupla months) where they they replaced the heater matrix in one of their project discos

Before you rip it to bits make sure it aint that hose that aint tight enough and its leaking past it into the matrix.
 
ah rite I'll have a look at LRO.

I know its the matrix as when i replaced the hose in the engine bay and made sure it was nice and tight i couldnt understand why there was still coolant p*ssing out everywhere. Bit of investigation and the plastic bit of piping on the matrix which sticks threw into the engine bad that the hose connects to was loose and i was able to withdraw it from the bulk head broken :-(
 
I've just been threw the Haynes manaul and there really is a lot of work invloved.

Only thing im slightly concerneed about is it talks about disconnecting the hand brake and needing a new split pin on replacement and re adjusting, can i just reuse the old split pin and how easy is the handbrake to adjust?

the split pin was a re-useable 'R' clip on mine, the handbrake shouldn't need adjusting
 
ah rite cool, I have bought a pack of assorted split pins just in case as I was in Halfords.

Is there any other jobs i can take care of whilst the dash is out? or is it more a case of "if its not broke dont try and fix it"
 
all completed and matrix in place, however with my clumsy hands i managed to break some flap control rods and flaps in the blower distribution unit. So dashboard will have to come out again another day when money time and weather permits replacing that!

Broken bits aside tho, the heaters arent getting very hot...is it likely i have air trapped somewhere?

what is the best method to bleed the coolant system?
