It may seem like a stupid thing to be thinking about but. . .
I work in London and not being able to drive the Fender to work is starting to get on my nerves (LEZ Nonsense).
Seeing as how my turbo sounds like it's dying and I've started burning a lot of oil and it's not running smoothly at all, I've been thinking about what might be involved with an engine swap- either to 2.5petrol or 3.5v8. I'm particularly curious as to what's involved in terms of gearbox and bulkhead. I had a new gearbox fitted not so long ago (at vast expense), so I'd rather not get rid of it.

Also, what experience have any of you got with power from these engines. I don't go fast and my 200tdi's been low on power for a while, so wondering if a 2.5petrol might be a better swap.

If it turns out to be a viable option for me I'd also fit an lpg kit to keep running costs down. And by reclassifying the vehicle as a petrol I'd be LEZ exepmt.

Anyway- I'm interested to know your thoughts.
 
2.5 petrol would be an esay fit ,bolt straight upto gear box and engine mounts ,if you use lift pump instead of electric one will make fuel piping easier,standard exhaust etc,v8 3.5 would want to be high compreession low anit a lot better than 2.5 petrol,you could find a conversion kit to fit your box but would need a lot of non std parts fabricating to fit otherwise to fit as lr with std parts you would need another gear box ,floor plates tunnel ,props etc
 
I'd thought about that too- but without fixing the engine trouble it's not worth anything. So I'd have to pay for the engine to be fixed up before I sold it. I've also wasted so much money on the truck already I'm reluctant to sell it as I'd loose all the money I've spent on it, I think that makes sense. . .
 
Its already lost. You're looking at a grand minimum for a conversion unless you do it yourself. Even then the engine will be hit and hope.

I have a 2.5 petrol atm.. can't get the damn thing to start.

at least you could look forward to 12-15 MPG :|

no spark or fuel ,they arent usually much trouble if ignition system serviced,maybe why your fuel consumption is so high ,
 
With the economy you get from a 2.5 petrol you may as well have a V8 and have a great noise :D

Fuel consumption wouldn't be much of a problem for me- it's the ease of conversion that's important at the moment as money is tight for the next few months, but i could do with not having to park her up until i can afford the conversion.

Oh yes :D

If fuel consumption was no problem for me, I wouldn't think twice, even if it was 5 times more work to get it to fit, I'd go for a V8, that sound makes up for everything :cool2: :)

But my dad has fitted a V8 to a friends Lightweight without much hassle, never really heard of people going for a 2.5 petrol because it isn't a very popular conversion, so you might have to ask around for people who have done it, Most common conversion me and my dad have done is 19j - 200tdi, like second nature now :D

Quick update- vehicle went in to the professionals today and the current 200tdi needs a bit of work- possible new oil pump and new turbo. I'm reluctant to do the work on an engine that has covered 200k- despite regular servicing, when it's not really doing me any favours. I've asked the garage to give me a quote for a conversion to petrol- we had a chat and he reckons the best route to go down would be a 3.9 v8, which sounds find to me- but it'll all depend on the cost of the conversion. Looking around at the stats the v8 is equal on fuel to the 2.5p and the garage reckons i'd really notice the power drop from my tdi. But we'll see. . .

Anyone want to buy a genuine 200tdi engine that needs a bit of work? ;);)

I'm reluctant to do the work on an engine that has covered 200k- despite regular servicing, when it's not really doing me any favours. I've asked the garage to give me a quote for a conversion to petrol- we had a chat and he reckons the best route to go down would be a 3.9 v8, which sounds find to me- but it'll all depend on the cost of the conversion. Looking around at the stats the v8 is equal on fuel to the 2.5p and the garage reckons i'd really notice the power drop from my tdi. But we'll see. . .

3.9 sounds like a good idea :D not sure how easy a 200tdi with a knackered turbo is to sell, you might be better cleaning the bits and selling them individually, manifold, cylinder head, rocker cover, block, fuel pump :rolleyes:

Yeah, i'd thought about that too, i'll have to make some calculations and see what's best.
